I like the alteration of the time line aspect of the movie and it looks like a big chase movie again. I'm down with this.

And as someone pointed out, those cars on that bridge are rather modern for the 80's. So does that mean that they do a Sara Connor Chronicles and jump into the semi-future?

Either way it looks like more fun than Salvation.

Okay, so I like the idea that everything has come full circle and they are sending Reese back in time again, only to have unexpected alterations, but this movie looks bad.

I think it's all pretty stupid, honestly. It's just trying to replicate T2.

I really kinda hate that this is an action series now, and if I had been asked for input, I'd go back to a more horror-infused take. I'd re-build the MENACE of the machines, instead of this jokey punchline nonsense.

When I read the first line of the trailer description that said it was the year 2029, I thought "Oh, so maybe this is Terminator 5 after all, being set after Salvation, and not a reboot?" I didn't read any further and I watched the trailer full of hope.

.....

...I'm not sure whether this is supposed to be an entirely rebooted canon, or if they're trying to pull an X-Men: Days of Future Past and make it an 'in-story reboot,' but either way I think this is a terrible premise for a Terminator story. It looks like a nonsensical hybrid of sequel, reboot, and remakes of T1 and T2 all rolled into one.

I think they've already milked this cow for all its worth two movies ago. Now it looks like they are going to do some kind of interruption in the continuous time-line ala J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek". I thought I worked well for Abrams. For this, I am not so sure.

I've reached the point with this franchise where I just throw my arms up and say, "Do whatever you want."

I get a Terminator 3 vibe from the tone of this trailer, which isn't a good thing, but I was hesitant about the Sarah Connor Chronicles before that show won me over, and I'm one of the half-dozen people on the planet who liked Salvation. So yes, this looks like a mess, but go on Hollywood, keep cranking them out and maybe there'll be something that makes it worth watching. And if not this one, maybe the next one. Who knows?

Based on the trailer, I think the main problem is the casting. The new Kyle Reese looks like an Action Man doll, which gels with the idea that Arnie was originally meant to play him in T1, but lacks the complex vulnerability that Michael Biehn brought to the role. Also, the new John Connor looks like he'd be more comfortable in a business suit and bowler hat, ridiculously over-designed facial scars aside. The only spot-on casting decision I can see is the new Sarah Connor; she could practically be a Linda Hamilton clone.

It's weird, but as messy as this looks, it was a more interesting trailer than both the Jurassic World and Force Awakens teasers.

The following trailer give away what is probably a twist to the movie, if it's not some sort of red herring. So if you don't want to have a major plot point spoiled avoid.

But in away it's so outrageous that it makes me want to see the movie more now. It's either going to be a glorious train wreck or a decent sci-fi action movie with old Arnie.

But god damn. Didn't Salvation's marketing teach them anything? Don't give us the twist in the trailers. Hell isn't the fact Sara was raised by the Terminator to be a bad ass before Kyle shows up enough of a twist?

This movie will be totally BONKERS and I'm kind of loving that.

But I'm not liking what looks lie paintball feeder sacks on the future weapons. Makes them look too much like come just shoved random stuff up from nerf and paintball guns onto to something and painted it black.

I'll give it this, it looks more like a Terminator movie than what Salvation ended up being.

The only thing that's working for me is Emilia Clarke as Sarah. But beyond that it looks awful. Paint me a heretic, but Salvation looked a whole lot better than this. I wouldn't be shocked if Salvation is no longer the black sheep after this movie is released.

God I miss the Sarah Connor Chronicles...

I don't know if there's really any way you can make a good Terminator sequel. If you put an aging Arnold Schwarzenegger in it, the movie comes across almost like a joke, and if you go the route of Terminator Salvation, it winds up not really even feeling like a Terminator film. No matter what they do, I'm always going to feel like the first two were excellent and all these belated sequels are just shallow cash grabs.

I think I enjoyed this movie more than the last two Terminator movies, though that's not really saying much. There are some interesting things they did with the story, although it really becomes convoluted at times. I just kept thinking it felt just like Days of Future Past...they're trying to use time travel to do a soft reboot for the franchise. The story, while somewhat intriguing, leaves too many questions unanswered at the end (maybe they're supposed to be set up for a sequel?)...thing to start to get a bit satire-ish for about a minute and then it's back to the mediocre action scenes. Some of the effects seem kind of rushed and subpar, and as one reviewer put it, this film contains pretty much the most boring helicopter chase scene ever put to film.

I thought there were some good character moments between Sarah and the T-800, and it was kind of fun seeing new takes on various classic moments from the original film. I can't really put my finger on why, but I can't stand the guy who plays John Connor.

Overall, I didn't leave the theater as annoyed as I did when I saw T3, and this feels more like a Terminator film than Salvation, but at this point, it just feels totally unnecessary, which is pretty much what I was expecting.

he Good - Every time Arnold or JK Simmons talked, awesomesauce poured out. They were utterly fantastic and you could tell Arnold was clearly having fun reprising the T101. Not only that, but the aspect of screwing up time from time travel was a pretty neat idea and the stuff with John would have been really awesome if the trailers hadn't already spoiled it!!

The Bad - Emilia Clark was horribly miscast and she seemed uncomfortable in her role. She is no Sarah Connor and they should have really gone for an unknown for the role. Also, there is a serious lack of character development and the plot does get really awkward when you think about it.

The Ugly - OH MY GOD, the CGI is absolutely atrocious. It looks like a PS3 game most of the time, especially when they have CGI plastered over the 1984 T101. Also, the CGI for the T1000 looks no better than it did in 1992, which is quite sad.

Overall, the movie is by far the best of the sequels that came out after T2, but still far from perfect. However, I went in with very low expectations and came out quite entertained thanks to Arnold's performance. The movie makes a lot of missteps and sequel baits (especially if you stay for the mid-credit scene, nothing after), but it did it well. The whole thing dealing with history changing was cool though and did something I was hoping to see done, so it gets bonus points for that. It is just a shame it did it in such a lazy haphazardly way. Nevertheless, if you go into this movie just wanting to watch an entertaining movie and can ignore how great the first two movies were, you can do much worse. If you are looking for a movie with great characters, a deep plot that makes sense, and the best special effects money can buy, go somewhere else. I give it a 7/10.

For context, I consider T3 to be, by far, the worst movie in the series. Its attempts at humour are cringe-worthy, it's lit like a TV movie, and its rendition of John Connor is irritating. Salvation I think is unfairly maligned, as to me it feels like one of the Dark Horse comics brought to life, and its selection of new Terminators and significant use of practical effects make it entertaining for robot fans, despite its doom-and-gloom seriousness. Genisys pitches its humour with the same fine balance that T2 managed, and hits more often than it misses. Characters are mostly well cast, with Jai Courtney turning in a much better Kyle Reese than I expected and Emilia Clarke making an excellent Sarah Connor. The only significant problem with Genisys is how exposition-heavy the first act feels, rushing to explain the original time-line, quickly followed by more explanation of everything that's changed. But, like T1, it intersperses the exposition with plenty of action, so it doesn't become dull. Aside from that it's a sometimes messy but consistently entertaining movie, and I hope it does enough business that we get the planned sequels this time.
