This movie rocked! That's the first time I've been able to say that about a WB/DC film since The Dark Knight Rises five years ago. This is certainly the best DC Extended Universe movie yet, although that's really just a fancy way of saying it's better than Man of Steel. I rented that one and thought it was pretty good but this is the first DCEU entry that I think is worth owning. In terms of superhero origin stories and/or first outings, I'd say it's up there with the likes of Superman, X-Men, Spider-Man, Thor, Captain America, and Deadpool. I don't think it's quite as top-tier as Batman Begins, Iron Man, or Guardians of the Galaxy but it's damn close.
Perfect casting all around, terrific performances, a captivating story with smart writing, sharp direction, smooth pacing… it's just totally better than anything the DCEU has produced so far. It's not perfect, and my biggest gripe is that Patty Jenkins imitates Zack Snyder's stupid 'stop/start' action style, which puts a damper on what's otherwise a positively gangbusters mid-film action sequence, but that doesn't happen too much. The film never drags and the strong character work carries the whole picture. I haven't seen any of the TV spots but I can happily say that the trailers were relatively spoiler-free.
I think it's funny that Wonder Woman feels the most 'MCU-like' of any DCEU movie yet, despite the fact that Batman v Superman was a direct response to The Avengers while Suicide Squad was trying to be Guardians of the Galaxy. With Wonder Woman, it feels like the folks at WB have finally cooled their jets and decided to make a standalone character piece with only the faintest connections to the rest of the DCEU, and they hired talented people who understand what makes the characters work. That's been the key to Marvel's success all along and Wonder Woman suggests that WB/DC is ready to stop rushing to play catch-up and just take their time to build this extended universe piece by piece. I know we've still got Justice League coming down the pipe later this year, and I'm already expecting Wonder Woman to be front-and-center in that marketing campaign, but this movie gives me a lot more hope for James Wan's Aquaman and Joss Whedon's Batgirl.
