the career of: George Lucas

I saw Red Tails today.

It sucked. Has the worst movie romance I've ever seen, totally hamfisted and way too simplistic for a complex story about race relations in war time. Totally sappy and DULL. And it is the EPITOME of the broad strokes George Lucas class of storytelling.

I can give Lucas credit for wanting to tell this story and for moving ahead and funding a big budget movie with an all black cast with all the odds against him. And I can give him credit for having a movie full of black characters that didn't act totally coonish. Being half black myself, I tend to rage HARD against the lack of good work for black actors in Hollywood and Hollywood's general... prudishness if you will towards having things like smart black characters, interracial relationships, etc., I WANTED this movie to be good.... BADLY.

But it sucked. A colossal missed opportunity.

I watched an interview with George Lucas on the Daily Show. Lucas apparently has ideas for a prequel and a sequel to Red Tails, and in his words, "They're way better than this one."

I about fell out of my chair.
