December 2020 is a risky move for Fox, since that year's Star Wars anthology movie hasn't been announced yet, making it a wild card. I don't think the current one-movie-per-year pacing is enough to cause franchise fatigue by 2020. If Disney come up with a concept for that year's anthology movie that captures the imagination of the mainstream public, I could easily see Avatar 2 getting trounced at the box office.

As much as I love Cameron's movies and expect the sequels to be solid enertainment, Avatar's place in the cinema-going zeitgeist has been and gone, especially since no one cares about 3D anymore. Avatar 2 needed to come out by 2012 at the latest to avoid feeling like an anachronism.

Yeah, I'm thinking Disney wants Star Wars to be a Christmas tradition for the foreseeable future.

Disney just made a major left turn by scheduling Star Wars - Episode IX for May 24, 2019. With Fox setting all four of their Avatar sequels as December events, it looks like Disney is trying to reposition Star Wars as a mid-May/Memorial Day franchise, as it was for the first six movies from 1977 to 2005. It seems unlikely that they'll shift the young Han Solo spinoff to December 2018 at this point.

It's funny because I think the reason why Fox announced a December 2020 release for Avatar 2 is because they expected Disney to put Episode IX in December 2019. I wonder if Fox will wait a bit and then change the release date for the first sequel to a year sooner. Fox doesn't have anything scheduled for late 2019 at this time. DIsney has Frozen 2 set for November 27, 2019, followed by "" on December 20, the same day as Universal's feature adaptation of the musical Wicked.

Everytime new news hits on Avatar sequels I find myself surprised the project is still in development. At this point there will be 11 years between the original film and the first sequel

At this point, I've completely stopped caring. Every times there is news, there seem to be more sequels and a pushed back date. In 10 years from now, he'll say its coming out in 3 years, but there are 12 movies planned, all filming back-to-back

I'm wondering if these sequels will still be called Avatar, with numbers and/or subtitles, or if Cameron will opt to give each film its own original title. A title like Avatar 2 or Avatar: Return to Pandora could induce more eyerolls than excitement by 2020, eleven years removed from the first movie. Both Avatar and Titanic before it got bold, iconic one-word titles so maybe Cameron will want the same for these new films.

This guy is getting to be more and more like John Carpenter, in that publicly he rips most current films as junk, bemoaning that there's nothing original anymore... yet shamelessly continues whipping a dead horse; in Cameron's case, endless (and totally pointless/unneeded) TERMINATOR sequels ...in a thin attempt to remain relevant and milk something until it's more or less nothing but an 'in name only' product, completely staining the poignancy and glory of the original(s).

AVATAR wasn't even that good of a movie, honestly. It was a blatant rip-off of DANCES WITH WOLVES (and even FERNGULLY: THE LAST RAINFOREST!). Only the at-the-time novelty of new 3D technology made it 'cool' and a must-see. 3D itself has, IMHO, long since worn out its welcome; now pretty much nothing but a lame marketing gimmick used by greedy studios in order to milk a little extra $$$ with slapdash converted editions of 2D-filmed flicks.

Only reason I wanted to see Avatar before it came out was for the high end CGI. The only reason I might watch avatar again is for the pretty CGI.
