Anyone watch Luke Cage?

I liked the first half substantially more than the second half. There was also some inconsistent acting that makes me wonder if this was rushed.

I can't believe I didn't comment on Luke Cage when it came out! I watched it again in preparation for Iron Fist and was glad I did. It reminded me that Marvels Netflix shows can be damn good. I wish I could say the same about Iron Fist.

Iron Fist is a long time favorite of mine. From back in the days when Chris Claremont was writing the book and was full of fresh ideas, (Fun fact, Wolverines arch foe Sabertooth first appeared as an Iron Fist villain) through the Heroes for Hire years, his death, and eventual rebirth. I was really looking forward to the series and had high hopes given what had come before. I can't say I was completely disappointed by it, but I was let down. The story wanders around, trying to find a solid setting. The reasons for Danny Rand to come back to New York are basically homesickness (though he had spent more of his life in K'un Lun than out of it) and his reason to stay is that The Hand has apparently infiltrated his fathers company, and the Iron Fist is the enemy of The Hand. It feels tacked on, and it doesn't help that most Hand members in the show don't look like the ninja's from Daredevil. They look like street thugs and carry automatic weapons.

The fight scenes were mostly lackluster, in part because most of Iron Fists fights are in the dark (presumably to hide Finn Jones lack of fighting skills) The most impressive fights belonged to Jessica Henwicks Colleen Wing, a couple of underground cage matches, and a pair of sword duels. I was willing to give this a pass, until I watched the first episode of the second season of AMC's Into the Badlands, and watched two totally awesome fight scenes. Into the Badlands is more Iron Fist than Iron Fist!

And then there's the bad guys. Admittedly, Harold Meachum is a wonderfully manipulative "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!". And we get to see much more of Madame Gao, and her wicked machinations. But the showdown in the final episode is just so 80's cliched, right down to a rooftop confrontation and ending. I expected more, given both the source material, and what Marvel had done in the previous four series. And don't get me started on the "twist" in the story involving one of the main characters

I really wanted to like Iron Fist, but the best I can say is that, you'll want to watch it going into The Defenders, it probably has a number of plot points you'll need to see, and while it is a let down from previous series, it's not awful. It's just not as great as it should have been.

For Iron Fist, I like the characters, the acting is better than Luke Cage, but I'm struggling to get through it. With the rest of the Netflix Marvel stuff I have been so engaged that I binge watched the series over 3 days.. with Iron Fist I have been watching one episode a night and i fell asleep on both episodes 7 and 8... i need to rewatch everything after the drunken fighting match in 8 before i can move on with 9 tonight. I do think the Meachums are the best part of the show so far, and despite Claire getting some of the best lines, she feels more tacked on here than she did in Luke Cage.

Once the Bakuto storyline kicked off I was hooked again, so this kind of ran opposite of Luke Cage for me as enjoyed the second half more than the first. I still think that they overplayed Claire, there was plenty of opportunity to use her in her existing role in the universe with having her in a combat role.

I'll agree that the last half did seem to be more together and interesting than the first half. But once Claire found out that The Hand was involved, why didn't she contact a certain blind attorney of her acquaintance?

The Defenders Trailer looks great. Glad to see Daredevil and Jessica Jones back in the mix

I've been able to fit the first three episodes into my schedule today. And while I'll hold off on any specific comments on the show so far, I will say this, "Yeah! Marvel's back in the groove baby!"

I have a feeling I'm really going to enjoy the rest of it from what I've seen so far.

What a god damn excellent show this was! We started watching it with the plan to watch four episodes tonight, and four tomorrow and ended up just watching all eight without a break. First off, holy "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!", Jessica Jones was awesome here. I found her completely unlikable in her first season, but loved nearly every scene she was featured in in this show. All of her one liners were spot out and Ritter did a great job. I hope this is the Jessica we have in her next season as now I am looking forward to it.

Secondly, the chemistry between our main heroes was also phenomenal. Their banter across each other was hilarious and it was nice to see the group act like a bunch of misfits who don't get along, but ultimately decided to put aside their differences to save the city because that is what real heroes do.

Next up, the fight choreography was top notch. Why couldn't it have been like this in Iron Fist? This is exactly what it should have been. Not to mention this show even made Danny a likable character too. My favorite fight scene is in the underground area of episode 8 when the camera just kept moving around and we got to see everyone get some great moves in without it feeling obnoxious. Of course, the first fight scene with all four was also great with its camera work. In fact, the cinematography was just top notch all around. I feel it was on par with what we got from Luke's season.

On the downside, since we already know these characters, don't go in expecting the best character development of the franchise. It still has a lot of that, but since we already know who these characters are, they didn't waste time on origin stories and the like, which is the way it should have been. The same goes for the villains. We have already had three of the five seasons dealing with The Hand, so there is no Kingpin or Purple Man levels of development. Of course, Sigourney Weaver really steals the show whenever she is on camera, so it's not like we have mediocre villains like the movies tend to have. There is a lot of depth to her character.

The only flaws I can think of include them not really telling us how Luke got out of jail, no costume for Iron Fist, and Colleen gets stuck as a background character for most of the show. Nevertheless, CW/WB/DC have A LOT to live up to with this year's crossover for their Flash/Arrowverse. This may also be my favorite Netflix season thus far.

I'm knee-deep in Ultraman at the moment so probably won't get to The Defenders for a little while, but I'm really curious why he's not wearing the Daredevil outfit.
