I think the main reason a Deadpool movie hasn't come to fruition is because Fox is reluctant to release a big-budget, comic-based movie with an R rating, and they know that they'd fail to attract Deadpool's existing fan base if the movie wasn't as violent and profane as the source material. The traditional belief is that tentpole pictures need to be PG-13 to allow for the maximum range of potential ticket buyers, but I think the opening weekend exit polls of many recent superhero films indicate that adult viewers can absolutely carry this kind of movie to success.
Guardians of the Galaxy - 55 percent over age 25
X-Men: Days of Future Past - 59 percent over age 25
Thor: The Dark World - 61 percent over age 25
The Wolverine - 58 percent over age 25
Iron Man 3 - 55 percent over age 25
Captain America: The First Avenger - 58 percent over age 25
Thor - 72 percent over age 25
Just imagine how much bigger those percentages would be if they included viewers aged 17 to 24. I think a big-budget, R-rated Deadpool movie could easily be a hit.
