^ That would be terrific! Simon Kinberg did a great job co-writing X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse. His audio commentaries with Bryan Singer for both films show that they're on the same wavelength with this series so I think it would be in good hands with Kinberg. I was worried we wouldn't get a follow-up to Apocalypse after the undue critical backlash it got (I loved it).

Fox now has three 'X-Men' movies set for release next year.

20th Century Fox sets aside peak summer real estate for the superhero sequel and slides 'New Mutants' into the spring.

Shane Black's sequel is getting the 'Guardians of the Galaxy'/'Suicide Squad' treatment.

The news was announced on the movie's official Facebook, along with a picture of director James Cameron and crew.





Rawson Marshall Thurber, who worked with Johnson on the upcoming 'Central Intelligence,' will write the 'Skyscraper' script and direct the feature.


The Dwayne Johnson 3D action-thriller will hit theaters on July 13, 2018.

Superhero Bits: X-Men: Dark Phoenix Will Be More Grounded, Mutant Response Division & More

^ My guess is that Dark Phoenix will be more grounded in the sense that it will be cheaper than Bryan Singer's last two X-Men movies. Days of Future Past had a $200m budget and Apocalypse cost $178m, and this is Simon Kinberg's directorial debut.

Box Office Mojo is still listing the title as simply Dark Phoenix but a lot of editorial websites refer to it as X-Men: Dark Phoenix. I'd honestly be surprised if Fox put "X-Men" in the title. The recent ensemble films without the original trilogy cast have had significantly less box office pull. X-Men: First Class played mainly to fans, then X-Men: Days of Future Past was more of a general audiences hit, then X-Men: Apocalypse was another fans-only affair. I figure they're calling it Dark Phoenix with the hope that audiences won't think of it as the latest chapter in an X-Men series they lost track of but instead as more of a standalone event like Deadpool or Logan.

I understand the saying "You can never go home again"...but a lot of fans such as myself remember that the 1990's FOX animated series actually did a good job of telling the story of The Phoenix Saga (5 episodes) and Dark Phoenix (4 episodes). (sans any intermediate sparsely connected stories).... Someone on one of the emdia outlets thought this would be a great story to tell on an HBO or even Netflix type forum. Maybe in a GoT set up (not the sex/violence of course)...But maybe in format of 7 or 8 one hour episodes....Also the settings are very different.

Most of the Phoenix Saga did take place in Outer Space, so a GotG feel would very much work. Dark Phoenix however did start small with the Hellfire Club and then move to the intergalactic setting for its conclusion. Also Lilandra was not really the antagonist in either series... I'm sorry for being skeptical, but after how messed up Apocalypse was, I don't see how Dark Phoenix can work theatrically. It's amazing to me to think that DoFP fixed everything that The Last Stand screwed up, only to have Apocalypse muck it all up again. X-Men, like Star Trek seems to be building a history.....

The Wolverine films, and Deadpool I don't include since they are all stand alone films, but the pattern shows that Dark Phoenix *should* be a return to greatness...but everything I've heard so far doesn't inspire confidence.

The problem with X-Men: The Last Stand isn't that it's not a faithful adaptation of either The Phoenix Saga or The Dark Phoenix Saga. The problem is that it's a terrible movie. Jean/Phoenix has almost no dialogue and gets to show zero personality; the history of Jean and Magneto is ridiculously retconned and it doesn't jive at all with the prior two films; Cyclops, Mystique, and Professor Xavier are wasted; and it's all wrapped up in a mess of a story about a serum that completely rewrites mutant DNA in a matter of seconds.

I think The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine are the only truly bad X-Men-related movies that Fox has put out. Everything else has ranged from good to freaking great with this year's Logan a bloody masterpiece, and they all deviate from the source material in significant and often drastic ways. It's not like Mysterio, Hawkeye, or the Hulk appeared in Logan despite their roles in the Old Man Logan comic arc. I don't expect or want the upcoming Dark Phoenix to be a faithfully specific translation of the source material either. To me that's what the '90s animated series is for, and it's not like I couldn't seek out the original comics and read those if I really wanted to. I just want Dark Phoenix to be a good movie, faithful in the ways it needs to be and adapting the rest to fit the established saga.

I know this discussion has been had before but....(and this can apply to any film animated or live action that is based ona comic book...)

I know that film developers feel they have to 'adapt" stories. That's why casting roles may sometimes change nationalities, or evwen genders of characters. If the story is set too long ago, they will change the setting and *modernize* it....

Just for once however...I know this is bold thinking...how about we take a comic, or a particularly well known story arc, and make an honest-to-goodness attempt at a faithful adaptation? Cast everyone exactly how they looked in terms of appearance, gender, clothing etc... straight out of the comic. If it was released in the 1960's, 70's 80's...let THAT be when it takes place (unless of course its a future story...) Include only the characters that were actually involved. Don't add any or take any away *just because*.....

Now I've heard all the arguments before...It wont work, it'll be--too long, too short, offend PC sensibilities...too expensive.....But instead of saying all the reasons it wont work, why doesn't any studio just have the courage to TRY IT once and see.

Sure I know most studios are knee deep in franchises already established but it seems to me the F4 would be the best candidate for this. Of course, we may have to wait a decade, and perhaps the rights shift back to Marvel...But if they honestly tried to do a 1:1 translation onto the big screen of F4#1 I think the first family of comics would finally have success. You can cast them age appropriate, and set it in the 1960's, Make Mole man the main villain, with those crazy monsters, it would be amazing!

Now I know it isn't 100%, but the *most* faithful adaptation I am aware of is the DC animated film The Dark Knight Returns which was originally released in 2 parts, but later fused into one single film, and from all indications, fans seemed to be pretty pleased with that release.

So you assume that if a comic book version of a movie was truly adapted form it's source, general audiences would not turn up to see it? I'll reserve that judgment until it actually happens.
