PotA and 2001 were going for totally different effects. 2001 was trying to create the illusion of real apes, which it did successfully enough for suspension of disbelief to function. PotA was creating a more impressionistic effect, but allowing the actors' faces/expressions to be more important than the make-up, and it did so absolutely brilliantly.
It's kind of absurd to compare the two 1:1, but, gun to my head, if I had to choose one to give an award to, it would be PotA.
Tokyo, a smoldering memorial to the unknown, an unknown which at this very moment still prevails and could at any time lash out with its terrible destruction anywhere else in the world.
