I think Koba's hatred and his desire for power are a direct response to feelings of abuse and powerlessness. He's definitely prone to blood lust and blind to anything but his own goals. But I don't think he has a sufficiently advanced conception of morality to even understand things like compassion or forgiveness; he can only perceive those as weakness, and he cannot conceive of "the greater good."

Good points.
Koba is like a teen age boy. Full of testosterone. He hasn't lived long enough to really be in control of his feelings. He's still an animal living on instinct and not intelligence.

It really shows you how a movie can go when last year Toby Kebbell played one of the greatest villains in recent memory with Koba, and this year one of the worst (Dr. Doom in FF2015).

PotA and 2001 were going for totally different effects. 2001 was trying to create the illusion of real apes, which it did successfully enough for suspension of disbelief to function. PotA was creating a more impressionistic effect, but allowing the actors' faces/expressions to be more important than the make-up, and it did so absolutely brilliantly.

It's kind of absurd to compare the two 1:1, but, gun to my head, if I had to choose one to give an award to, it would be PotA.
