you know the only ape movie i do like is battle for the Planet of the Apes for the reason that they bring in the idea of apes and humans living together in some what peaceful life and
it gives mankind a bit of a break.

Marketing for War was terrible. It was hardly marketed at all, and what was marketed didn't show a film that differed much from Dawn. Just poorly done and audiences didn't respond.

^Sandwiched between Spider-Man and Christopher Nolan didn't help either. As a matter of fact, didn't Spidey underperform a bit against its high expectations?

The story a lot of industry publications are going with for this year's box office is a kind of quiet sea-change from the assumptions of the last decade in terms of box office. A lot of sure-fire hits bombed or underperformed, while some (like Wonder Woman) did incredibly well, and several low or mid budget films broke out and were big hits. Know what's really interesting? The most anticipated movie coming out in the next month is It; an R-rated tentpole horror film, with a budget in the 40 million range! Not a low-budget Saw or Paranormal Activity thing, but far cheaper than a superhero film. It'll be interesting if the movie is a big hit what studios will do in response.

Anyway, haven't managed to catch the new Planet of the Apes yet. Hopefully get to it... maybe today? Tomorrow? If it's a satisfying capper to this trilogy of Ceaser-centered films I won't mind if it's the end for now.

Finally caught War for the Planet of the Apes at the theater and I was really happy with it. If it is the end of the franchise for a while I think it was a fulfilling one.

I thankfully remained pretty unspoiled. Honestly, I'd put off this film a bit because I figured the movie would be intense, constant battle of a film, and I was surprised that that was not the case at all.

Man, PotA has a high degree of good to great movies that is exceptional in a long running franchise. Battle and the Burton remake are the weakest. The original, Escape, Conquest and the new movies are great. Beneath is so damn crazy you can't help but respect it on some level. That's a terrific run!

I'm actually very, very fond of Battle. I'd say the weakest points are the Burton movie and Rise, the latter of which just felt like it was... doing a job in order to build to the kinds of stories we got from Dawn (easily my favorite of the new flicks) and War.

It's a really hard series for me to rank because I feel like War, Dawn, Escape and the Original are all on a level...the original for obvious reasons, Escape for its originality, and Dawn and War for really developing characters and building a mythos and a legend that you could see becoming the society of the originals.

That's where I think this new series has EXCELLED. You can nitpick the actual origins of the apes and all that stuff, but you can see over the course of these films how an entire society could end up being built around this one ape, and how those who try to fill his shoes later on simply can't and how the message could get twisted and splintered and the society of the original films could form. It's been a brilliant character study

Then I'd put Conquest and Rise on a same level of really fun and enjoyable and basically good, but limited in one way or another.

Then Beneath as just wildly entertaining, despite its many flaws.

Battle is...okay, I guess. It's watchable.

The Burton film is garbage, except for the makeup.

I think if I HAD to rank them, it'd probably go something like:

Planet of the Apes (original)
Conquest (structurally a little clunky, but the imagery and tone are too perfect)
Escape (such a good script)
Battle (fun, fun, fun)
Dawn (solid script, solid performances)
Beneath (weird, deranged, unforgettable)
War (works well enough, but kinda forgettable)
Rise (filling in meaningless mechanical details)
Planet of the Apes (Burton)

How Beneath the Planet of the Apes Nearly Buried The Franchise

I've seen the original Planet of the Apes... I dunno, maybe hundreds of times in my life. But I'd gone nearly 8 years without watching it prior to last night, which is shocking (it used to be something I'd watch maybe every 8 days...).

I knew it was one of my favorite movies, but I'd kind of forgotten how intensely I love pretty much every single moment of it. Like, it's just stunning image upon stunning performance upon stunning dialogue upon stunning concept again and again and again for over 100 straight minutes.

Having my love for the movie renewed so strongly literally had me in tears. It's "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!" beautiful.
