I've got mixed feelings about this. The main thing I like is that the visual style actually looks like cyberpunk, instead of the squeaky clean cybergloss that Hollywood has been turning out for the last decade. The cast also look like a good fit. Everything else though... It sounds like the Major is the first full-body prosthetic in this continuity, which runs contrary to one of the main themes of the originals, namely depicting a world where the line between man and machine has already been all but erased, and self-perception is a fragile thing. Lumbering the plot with a lost past angle risks making it far more backwards facing than GitS traditionally has been. Sure, introspection has always been a significant element, but the central thrust of the narrative is usually around pushing forward with a criminal investigation. This feels too much like the trope of the protagonist having to be unique and special in some way.

My gripe with anime to hollywood is usually how bland and boring it is. This doesn't look bland or boring and by the way... they have a shelling sequence in this movie... Not sure if Kawaii's score is going to make it in but there are other videos of the event where he is playing live over this sequence.

This actually looks a lot better than i thought it would. I'm definitely feeling the visuals. Happy to see Beat Takeshi getting some screen time in Hollywood.

It certainly looks nice, but the hints at a 'stolen past, amnesiac hero' angle to the story seem far more simplistic for GITS, and more like a myriad of other action heroes.

Everyone else is half and half? Doesn't seem to make sense to go that route.

I just realized its been 20 years since I saw the original animated film in its very limited theatrical run back in 1996! The film is still one of the best anime experiences I've had, unfortunately I have not seen any of the subsequent TV series or animated films. This live action version doesn't appeal to me. Not because I don't think they aren't trying, its just that historically, anime really doesn't translate well to live action.

It looks like it is respectful enough where I can enjoy this as a fan of the GiTS movies. I like the SaC series but I only watched them once so I don't really remember a lot about them. I'm a bigger fan of the movies.

The movie looks like Production I.G was in charge of the look of the movie cause they seemed to have nailed it. It is grittier looking cyber punk and not trying to be clean cut.

I'll see it to give it a chance, but it looks more Blade Runner than Ghost in the Shell to me. You might think that is odd given the nature of the two franchises, but the world of GitS did not have electronic billboards buzzing on every building like the movie trailer has.

Man, we're getting all sorts of TV spots and trailers for this movie now and I'm just not feeling it. Like I mentioned earlier, it seems the central theme of the movie is drastically simplified and far more generic when compared to all previous versions. In the various Japanese incarnations we're in a world where a large portion of humanity has transitioned to at least a partially cyborg/digital existence. It's about the blurring line between man and machine, with a main character that's more machine than practically any other of the cyborgs and questions her existence. The various ads for this film tell the story of the Major being turned into a cyborg against her will, and her getting revenge on those who stole her... memories? Humanity?

Not only is that not what Ghost in the Shell is about, it also sounds like a bunch of Hollywood action thrillers we've seen that have sci-fi elements or amnesia or brainwashing as plot points.

Movie looks like it was ripped right out of a production IG art department.

I was expecting generic action flick with anime title but I see they are making an attempt to duplicate the original movie. I'll be there opening weekend.

Also ScarJo looks like the major.

Well they have completly screwe Batou up. His eyes are just glasses in this movie. -_-

The only thing that makes this pass off as Ghost in the Shell is that they have ripped action scenes right out of the source material. None of the characters or story even remotely resembles GitS.
