I remember the ads they played on TV where you could call a 1-800 number for the most violent and crazy Japanese animation ever.

I think it was for Streamlines releases but I'm not sure.

Anyways, I'll be seeing this Sunday. If your a fan of Ghost in the Shell it doesn't look like a complete waste of time.

I remember seeing this one of the Sci-Fi channel. It terrified me. For a while there as a kid in the '90s it felt like anime was this satanic thing that your parents would keep you away from.

I remember seeing that as a kid and going "what the hell is Akira anyways?" I was also slightly freaked out by the gore cause I didn't expect it.

Now I have all the mangas, 5 different copies of the movie and a bunch of action figures of it. Movie broke me.

Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex is one of my favorite anime series of all time while the franchise as a whole has been spectacularly confusing due to its philosophical ideology. Does this American adaptation continue this tradition? Or is it just another generic piece of gutter trash? Watch to find out.

^ I suspect much of the lack of audience anticipation can be attributed to the trailers trumpeting the "amnesiac protagonist with a hidden past" elements of the plot. I haven't seen the movie yet, so I don't know if that's as central to the narrative as it appears, but that's one of the most trotted out Hollywood plotlines for action movies, and the trailers seem to give away every beat of it. I doubt the so-called white-washing is a factor, since the mainstream audience won't know the source material, and only a handful of vocal fans and click-baiting journalists are making noise about it.

I'm planning to see it over Easter, since I love cyberpunk, but I wish they'd gone a different direction with it.

Sounds like a garbage fire, honestly. Somehow the filmmakers managed to make the whitewashing aspect even worse than it already was.

I thought this was quite good. I've never read the manga or seen any of the animated adaptations so none of that had any bearing on my viewing experience. I was worried this movie would end up being a generic action fest but it's actually a lot more thought-provoking and character-driven than I was expecting. The cast is great, the story is intriguing and there's a lot of elegantly managed worldbuilding on display.

I'm curious, I know nothing of the source material, but I've heard plenty of the whitewashing claims. Is being Japanese, or Asian, actually intrinsic to the character of the Major? Or is it just another case of the internet being outraged for the sake of being outraged and the major was originally Asian because it was an anime and all the characters were Asian?

Saw it. It was okay.

Didn't care to see the major be so emotional all the time but I guess Hollywood can't handle a woman not crying on screen. Also how did Batou get to her boat?

The city looked cool. I thought most of the action was kind of sub-par with the exception of the spider tank scene. Kind of wished they used Kenji's music other than the credits.

At the end of the day I find this remake to be pointless. I love animation and that was what always drew me to the movies/series. Hopefully the abysmal box office performance prevents Akira from ever being made.

Beat Takeshi had the best lines and Batou wad awesome. Most of the side characters were good. Johansson felt flat to me though.

Beat Takeshi and the music were the only things that saved the film. It's nowhere near as bad as DB Evolution, as you can tell the director is a fan of the franchise. The problem is, all he did was take his favorite scenes from the various series and movies and stitch them together with a paper thin cookie cutter generic Saturday morning cartoon plot.

Also, the rest of Section 9 are pretty much wallpaper. Meanwhile, some woman they made up for the movie gets to go out on the missions with Batou instead of the actual GitS characters. They also turned Togusa into a 50 year old lifeless Chinese man.

I enjoyed it, but it felt a lot like a Best Of GitS plots, so I don't think it really stood enough on its own. The villain was super weak as well.

This had the potential to be GREAT, and I was very on board despite a couple minor contrivances and annoyances, until Major finds out who she was before she became a GHOST IN THE SHELL. Then it just kinda sputters, with a lackluster climax, and (most jarringly) these scenes with , the first of which is so out of place and confusing that had I been watching this for the first time at home, I'd have rewound to make sure I didn't miss something.


Overall, it was enjoyable because the cast was good, the visuals were great, the music was solid and the world-building was amazing, but it really didn't stick the landing. The problem here is the script, I think, as the movie was co-written by a man who's previous output includes Transformers, Scream 3, and The Brothers Grimm. I think they were afraid to get as cerebral as something like this really should have been.

Still, I mostly enjoyed it. 3/5.

If by unflipped you mean Japanese right to left then yes. However, the english version will still be in black and white while other versions are in full color.

I'm a little sketchy on the details now. I will engage in a colored English box set but I already have the Dark Horse b&w versions so I don't need more.
