Akira is IMPORTANT...but it's not FLAWLESS.

I dunno, I don't put it on a pedestal. I like it. I own it. But I'm not opposed to a remake in theory. It's a fairly stunted, sloppy, rushed movie. It's not like the anime is THE definitive take on it. I say remake it. If it sucks, oh well. If it's good then hooray.

^ The movie as a whole isn't perfect... I mean, in contracting the story to movie-length there is some awkwardness, but as an achievement in animation? Untouchable. There are sequences in this movie that take my breath away every time.

Remaking it seems pointless. I never once had the desire to see this brought to live action. It's all about the art work that attracts me to it. I just feel the studio is trying to get as much out of the name Akira without making it anything like Akira.

If the budget is huge, it will be PG-13. That means the grossness of the post WWIII Tokyo and the Post-apocalypse Tokyo will be cleaned up. That also means Tetsuo's transformation might be out. I don't see how you can get around doing that without all the grossness and make it the same. Then the issue of it being a heavy Japanese influenced movie is going to be tough sell. To me it seems like a massive head ache for a studio.

I'm not opposed to doing a live action adaptation but my cynicism with how anime to live action adaptations make me say, "What's the point." It isn't going to ruin the source material for me regardless of what they do with it. I'm just baffled they won't quit on the project. If it got/gets Otomo a huge payday, then I am happy for him.

When a friend of mine talked to me about Ghost in the Shell 2017 he said, "I hope that is the chlorine gas that kills all future anime projects in Hollywood." I laughed. I do think some anime titles could do with Hollywood completely thrashing the source material and making it their own. (Attack on Titan comes to mind) I could give a crap what creative liberties they take with those characters. As long as creepy giants eat people and get cut to shreds I am happy.

I love Taika, but stripped from its cultural place just what is Akira about?

I certainly hope that some of the character descriptions that apparently leaked are from an earlier version of the script, because it ages the characters up slightly, and if the film is lacking the juvenile delinquency angle then that's another huge chunk of substantial thematic stuff taken out.

lol one of the early scripts had Kaneda as a bartender and Tetsuo was his brother.

Just to clarify, I am not even mad that this live action movie exists. I just shrug my shoulders and say... "What is the point?"

Half the appeal is the animation/character art and live action just negates that. I'm a dorkish fan of Akira and I probably won't even bother watching this movie in the theaters.

I think WB should have cut it loose and focused all their energy into making Attack on Titan. Make the characters actually interesting and mess with them all you want. For WB this is a damned if you do and damned if you don't kind of movie. It ain't going to make money.
