This seems like a terrible idea. Production isn't going to be cheap and that license is ridiculously expensive. Amazon could green light 10 high fantasy series for the price tag and not be in the shadow of a critically and financially successful film series

Jeff Bezos has been going on about wanting his 'own Game of Thrones.' That's one way to do it!

I'd prefer an Earthsea or (gods willing) Discworld series.

It's too bad Terry Brooks' Shannara series is already locked up for television -- the first season last year was terrible; a lot of fans stopped watching somewhere around episodes 3-5. The second season started airing last month and shifted networks from MTV to Spike, but I haven't bothered to watch. I know what you're thinking, "What did you expect from a show running on MTV?", well Brooks himself told readers on his website that MTV was the final choice because they let the production company and him have most all the creative control over the series, and folks believed him. It wasn't until after the show started airing that Shannara fans found out just how much was changed (for no good reason) but just how much the story had been MTV-ized.

I think Brooks' Landover series may be available, it would give Amazon a show with all the high fantasy elements and a healthy dose of humor.

"Direct to Netflix" is for some becoming a bad phrase.

I don't NECESSARILY agree, but I think it's important to distinguish "Developed for Netflix" (Gerald's Game, 1922, Hush, Beasts of No Nation, The Babysitter), "Sold to Netflix" (indies like Okja and I Don't Feel at Home in this World Anymore, and The Ritual) and "Dumped on Netflix"

Mowgli has had trailers advertising its release. Getting dumped on Netflix like this to me signals one of two things:
1.) WB was nervous about it not being successful because we've had a recent Jungle Book movie. Netflix offered them a way to recoup their money with no worries.
2.) It's bad, and WB followed Paramount's 'Cloverfield Paradox' lead and unloaded a heap of trash.

Either way, not a good situation.

There's a difference between a movie that's developed for Netflix, or those small indies that get acquired by Netflix from film festivals, and the studio movie that the studio realizes is a heap of trash, so they dump onto Netflix in order to get out without losing their pants.

Apparently the director of Blade Runner 2049 is preparing a new, multi-part adaptation of Dune. It’s long overdue for a big Peter Jackson-style update, but having Kevin J. Anderson listed on the IMDB as “creative consultant” does NOT encourage me.

Wow. I wondered if Serkis would be dissapointed his first major directing venture was bypassing theaters and going straight to Netflix, but the fact that Netflix is also funding his dream project must soften the blow tremendously.
