MST3K Returns!

I've been skipping around, so I've watched Reptilicus, The Land that Time Forgot and The Beast of Hollow Mountain. I'm enjoying the revival. All the pieces seem to fit, although I wish Tom Servo had a more distinct voice. Not to say that Baron Vaughn should imitate Kevin Murphy, but just that, on a casual listen, he sounds a lot like Jonah right now. I've read some complaints about rapid-fire, off-time riffing, the new types of sight gags, etc., but I'm having enough fun watching the show that these don't bother me.

I've only gone through 3 eps, but I prefer stuff like Reptilicus and Ep3. I always loved when they used old school scifi over stuff like Cry Wilderness.
Tom Servo's voice is terrible and I can't stop noticing how terrible it is. Gypsy's bothers me, but she's so rarely used that I'm not as aggravated.

I've only watched (most of) the Reptilicus episode so far...

....sadly not really feeling it.

It seems a little too tryhard, not really genuine enough, something is off. Part of it is in the way they did the riffs, I think, where for the first time in series history, they all recorded their riffs separately instead of together while watching the movie in front of a green screen. The riffs come too fast and furious, the voices of Jonah and Servo are too similar, and with the smaller silhouettes (and fact that it's not actually someone puppeteering the bots and there's not much motion from the silhouettes) it's hard to tell which of those two is talking. Servo flying around is dumb and distracting and then Gypsy comes flying into the movie too...it's the most distracting the riffing has ever felt for me; it's like MST3K through the lens of modern reboots of old action movies where it has to have MOAR and FASTER and BRIGHTER and BETTERER!!!!!!

I've been told it starts to get a feel for itself by eps 3 and 4 but I turned off the Reptilicus episode Sunday night and haven't felt the remote urge to put it back on. This might get thrown into my "eventually" pile, which is an ever-growing list of things I'll get to "whenever" but never ultimately make a real dent in because things I actually want to see and enjoy end up floating to the top. Oh well.

At least watch The Land That Time Forgot episode. That one was the funniest imo.

Just finished Reptilicus, and I also find the show sadly lacking. It doesn't feel like a continuation of the show, it feels like a desperate, attention-grab of a reboot. I can deal with the new shadow antics inside the theater, but I have a hard time appreciating the actual riffing. Like JD25 said, they spend way too much time riffing. Most of the movie itself is inaudible. Once upon a time, MST3K knew when to just let a movie breathe. It shouldn't feel like a competition to see how many jokes they can cram into one showing.

Plus, how exactly did they get the bots back? Last we saw, they were sitting on a couch with Mike watching movies.

Well I've finished most of the episodes and I think the new season is great. Also...didn't expect the cliffhanger in-show ending. *Hopefully* the new season is liked enough so that Netflix decides to renew it. There are plenty of cheesy movies left in the world to riff on. I know securing rights to said movies isn't always easy, but some I would like to see would be:

Empire of the Ants
The X From Outer Space

The Milpitas Monster

Legend of the Dinosaurs and Monster Birds (the only KTMA series *Sandy Frank* dub that never got riffed on the national show)

Well that would be my perfect *next* season, all classics from when I was a kid though. Probably several of these they could not get the rights to, but I guess we'll see in time.

Gunhed would be AMAZING. I rewatched it recently, and it seems the director credit was changed to "Alan Smithee" at some point :p

I purposefully left off any Toho titles from my list because I know MST3K would never get the rights to them (most Godzilla films would be welcome additions). Not sure how TPC (Who owns AOTSM) would react...but I'm guessing kind of similar. I don't think Ultra 6 Brothers vs the Monster Army has an English dub, but heck, maybe they could get Space Warriors 2000? since its not a legit film, and has no copyright I am aware of.

^ D'oh you are correct. I always lump those in with Gamera (Daiei) since they were distributed by Sandy Frank, but yes they (Time of the Apes, Mighty jack and the Fugitive Alien films...) were TPC originally, gives me hope then.

considering that Shout! Factory owns mst3k now one would hope they can get more giant monster movies and others they could not get in the past.
