This movie stunk. About as fun as a slap across the face, except I'd take the slap, just because it's shorter.

And I'm not saying the movie is a slap to the face of Ghostbusters fans and that's what upset me (though it pretty much IS a slap to the face to Ghostbusters fans...but I'm on record as wondering if there really is such a thing), just me saying I'd prefer something unpleasant to this movie. Like stubbing my toe.

The blu-ray just came out in the UK. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie when I saw it in 2D at the cinema, so I was startled to watch the blu-ray tonight and find it presented in a very different way. I'm not talking about the extended cut, but rather that the 2D blu-ray has been derived from the Imax 3D master. Blu-rays copying the modern Imax irritation of switching back and forth between different aspect ratios is nothing new, but the way Ghostbusters handles it is different; something I hadn't heard about until it cropped up while watching it tonight. It maintains the appearance of a letterboxed 2.35:1 ratio for all but one scene, but, during almost every action scene, effects elements (ghosts, proton streams, etc) will break frame and move out over the black matte. It's an effect specifically intended for 3D, where I imagine it would be quite effective, but for 2D it's a constant distraction.

I tried the bundled Ultraviolet digital copy of the movie, and that is the standard 2D version will nothing breaking out onto the matte bars. So an HD master of the normal 2D version does exist, but it hasn't been used for the blu-ray. It's such a baffling decision that I'd almost think it's an authoring error. Can anyone who owns a non-UK release of the blu-ray confirm if the 2D disc is this Imax version with the frame breaks? For reference, the first instance is about 20 minutes in, when the ghost from the basement sprays slime everywhere. It's then much more pronounced during the subway scene where they test the prototype beam on the convict ghost.

I saw this last week, I thought it was really funny. My biggest complaint is how loose it feels, which is how I feel about every Paul Feig movie. It's like he wrote several episodes of a TV show and then crammed them all together. But the dialogue and performances were really funny. The trailers did not do it justice.

^ If this were to happen, best case scenario would be all the original cast and Maurice LaMarche standing in (respectfully) for Harold Ramis as Egon. One of the great things about animation is that the actors don't have to be in the studio recording together, even though the best animated series/films are done with ensemble casts. So Aykroyd an Murray would not even have to see each other technically if they have issues working together.

If Aykroyd backs out then Frank Welker would be a great stand in. If Murray backs out, then *sigh* I guess we could have Dave Caulier as much as it pains me. I'm pretty sure Ernie Hudson would not turn it down, plus he actually has experience doing voice acting for animation. As for Sigourney Weaver, I'm sure she would accept (if the script includes her character) . Anne Potts will probably accept as well. As for Rick Moranis...well I know he's kind of dropped out of acting altogether, but the character of Louis could easily be left out, or have someone stand in for Moranis.

I do think it's crazy the film cost so much. Personally, I think the cast was fine, but the writing and directing didn't hit that sweet spot of mixing comedy and supernatural adventure successfully. It often felt like a '90s/'00s kids movie like Hocus Pocus or one of the Scooby-Doo films. If I were Sony I'd keep the cast and essentially make a sequel that's a soft reboot with different creatives behind the scenes and half the budget.

With Ramis dead and Murray thoroughly disinterested I see no possible way to proceed with an actual sequel. As a matter of fact, if either one of those things had been the only obstacle in isolation I would say the same thing - but both?! Forgitaboutit!
