Conran's JCOM sizzle reel popped up online around the same time as Disney's/Andrew Stanton's version was being released. It's a terrible shame that Paramount executives kept yanking Kerry Conran around and never gave JCoM the green light. Ultimately Conran left and Jon Favreau came on as director, who also was keen on making a true to the book adaptation and Favreau's work so impressed ERB Inc. that Paramount was given a free extension on the movie rights.
From what I can tell with from the sizzle reel, I believe Kerry Conran's adaptation would have been truer to Edgar Rice Burrough's story (the single biggest flaw in Stanton's adaptation for many an ERB fan). I still wish that Paramount would have let Kerry Conran direct JCOM, the sizzle reel is fantastic and really brings forth the ERB adventure.
I like the movie Andrew Stanton delivered, it does a lot of things well despite the "good citizen" compromises, but at the same time some of the additions & changes to ERB's story don't necessarily add anything and in some cases can even take away from the story. To sum it up I'd say that Stanton delivered a very good movie, but it's not quite the adaptation that ERB fans were hoping it would be. I do believe that if Stanton had been given the go ahead for the sequels, GODS OF MARS and WARLORD OF MARS, they would have been far more in line with ERB's novels and much more in line with what ERB fans were looking for.
