So I just got back from Predators and all in all, its a mixed bag. The action is GREAT but everything else seemed kinda lazy. But I enjoyed it WAY more than I thought I did. For me it was one of those movies like Terminator Salvation or Star Trek, where I had a lot of fun in the theater, but from the second I walk out, I start to think about it and the more I think about it the worse it gets. I'll just break it down simply for now:
THE GOOD
-The cast is actually pretty good, even when they're spouting some awful dialogue... when you can sell such dumb dialogue, it shows they were taking it seriously (which is good). Brody was actually pretty cool in it. I usually like him, but I never thought he was right for this role... I was wrong.
-Laurence Fishburne is actually only in it for about 5 minutes and its the most (probably unintentionally) funny five minutes I've seen all year. He plays a crazy guy who talks to himself then SPOILER: explodes... and that's really all he does. Funniest cameo since Bill Murray in Zombieland last year.
-The action scenes really are spectacular and the whole film is shot really well.
-Its a fun movie! There are a couple lulls in the pacing (they try to space out the dialogue and action a little TOO evenly if that makes sense), and the last act just kinda drags.
-The Predators look great and even the other aliens on the planet are pretty cool.
-The music is really good. And they use the original film's theme really well. It was impossible not to grin from ear to ear when that music started playing.
-One thing is for sure. This film is (in my mind) the only true sequel to the original Predator. It doesn't take it to a level even close, but its a fun film and SOOOOOOOOOO much better than the boring and muddled P2 and those AVP abortions. This feels like the true sequel to Predator and for that, I have to give it some props.
The bad (and be warned, I will have some "nitpicks" here).
-Biggest problem is the writing. And I don't mean just the bad dialogue. I just mean the way the story unfolds. Everything is WAY too convenient. Brody figures everything out within the first 20 minutes of being there. Some things are just so lazy and clumsily handled (how does Topher Grace's character know the biological characteristics of ALIEN PLANTS?) The ONLY reason that's even there is so when the stupid "twist" is revealed he can (spoiler)use it as a weapon. REALLY? Did they even think when they wrote this movie or did they just try to figure out the laziest dues ex machina they could? Not to mention the twist (even though I knew it before hand) was pointless... why even bother doing that if its gonna go nowhere? That's just one example of the way this movie just conveniently goes from one thing to the next with no rhyme or reason. What bothers me most about all these things is that its pretty much ALL stuff that is introduced in the last 15 minutes of the movie, turning a really enjoyable experience into a bit of an eye roller. Its like the movie was doing just fine and practically committed suicide. Its like getting all foreplay and no orgasm.
-More writing stuff (sorry, I'm a writer, so script issues are the thing that really gets to me and sticks out in movies... trust me, I don't like being "that guy" but its always what I notice) Relating to Grace's character and what I just mentioned... there are ideas here that just don't go anywhere, much like the aforementioned twist.. There's a "blood feud" between two races of Predators, but its never developed and its pretty much pointless. It doesn't go anywhere. Its just an excuse to have two Predators fight and apparently it took bringing in a Predator race war subplot to do so. A cool idea, but its serves such a small purpose that its a wonder it was included in the final draft.
-Some choppy editing. For example, theres a scene where Grace's character is following everyone else through a tunnel system and suddenly gets lost. Then we see the people he was following walking the opposite direction in the tunnel next to him. What?
-I was a little disappointed that they didn't introduce any new weapons or even focus on the Preds weapons. Even Predator 2 had the creature show off some cool stuff. This one just has them with the things you already know they have and its just kinda dull.
-The infra red vision was really shaky and jarring. I wish they stuck to the old effect.
All in all, pretty sub par. I can't believe this is the story Robert Rodriguez had in mind for like 10 years... all that time and he couldn't have thought more things out? He probably should have written the script himself for this one cuz as it seems, the writers he hired didn't know where to go with it.
That's all for now. Curious to see what my fellow MZ'ers will have to say. I'll be doing a full length review pretty soon. I give it a 3/5.
