Great actor but I've never seen FMJ. I've seen him in things like Tales from the Crypt and the TCM remake.

Do yourself a favor and find a way to watch it. Amazing film. Actually, two amazing films. Halfway through it turns from a classic into a masterpiece.

Ermey was a hell of a character, and a hell of a character actor. Stories from the set of FMJ are legendary. He wasn't even supposed to be the DI (he was the actor's coach, just like he was in Officer and a Gentleman, but he was so good Kubrick put him in the role).

He won't be forgotten. He made a hell of an impact with that one movie.
I'm not a hero. I'm not a savior. Forget what you know.

I'm just a man whose circumstances went beyond his control.

He WAS Full Metal Jacket, imo. He was also great in the remake of Willard. R.I.P. "Gunney"

There's rumors of a 4K remaster in the works, so I'm just going to wait until that comes out to watch it.

Plus, who knows, my local Alamo Drafthouse might decide to show the movie now.

Always liked him. Legit guy.

And, he's great in a lot of his roles (and some great movies to boot):
Full Metal Jacket
Toy Story
The Frighteners
Saving Silverman
TCM remake (he's easily the best part of the movie)

Those last two (to me) show he had a little bit of range. Yeah, he's still an intimidating borderline psycho, but he was more screwball and goofy in Silverman and actually more serious and stoic in TCM.

RIP.
Gills.
