It's not perfect. But it does have some excellent effect work.
I think the main problem why it's shunned by fans is when you have such high end effects. And you combine that with the standard cheesy plots and acting found in the man-in-suit films. It ends up feeling like a SyFy channel movie.
If they had used suits. I think the fans would have given the plot and acting more of a free pass like they do the Godzilla films.
Using suits seems to have the effect of making people not take it too seriously. So a lot of really bad films get a free pass about their poor acting and plots compared to the ones done with CGI.
My theory is that rubber suits soften people up from being too critical. So the better the CGI. The better the acting and plot needs to be.
