Giant Monster films since 2001

Postby Pkmatrix » Sat Aug 29, 2009 10:37 am

So, I was thinking and it occurred to me: there haven't been very many giant monster films released in this decade, have there? If we say the current decade began in 2001 and will end next year, then all I've been able to think of are:

(NOTE: I'm counting films from both Asia and the West)

GMK
GxMG
Tokyo SoS
Final Wars
Gamera the Brave
The Ultraman
King Kong (2005)
Cloverfield
Monster X Strikes Back
Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus (Giant shark taking out Golden Gate Bridge = Giant monster film, in my book)

I also tend to count the two Transformers films, mainly because the battles (especially the finale of part 1) remind me so much of the Goji's rumbles.

Even then, though, that makes about 12 films. It seems somewhat... light. Am I missing any?

Well, there's Dragon Wars..... :?:

I've not seen it, and from what I've seen and read, I'm not really in any hurry to.... :?

Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest had the Kraken, but that's really just part of the movie, so I don't know if it qualifies to be mentioned in your list...or honorable mentions.

Ah yes The Host!! Sheer awesomeness!...tho the mouth bothers me from a simple biology aspect of mutations...mutations usually deal with size or extra appendages...but an organism doesnt grow new unheard of things...people wouldnt grow wings for example unless you are Marvel...so the mouth being all weird like that for a tadpole or whatever is just a pet peeve of mine....

If you're including the Transformers flicks, then I suppose War of the Worlds might count as well. The scene weith the tripod rising up out of the ground, letting out a bellowing cry, then blasting everything in sight is reminiscent of Godzilla flicks.

Doesn't the first HB have a giant monster too?
The Behemoth thingy at the end that comes out of Rasputin.
Also the Gods of Chaos or whatever that were coming out of the sky could be considered giant monsters.

But yeah HB2 definitely should be on the list due to the tree elemental thing. Good god, I need to rewatch these films I can't remember what to call things.

I already added the Hellboy films by the time this and others were posted; plus, the second film also had the Stone Giant, along with the Forest God / Elemental.

MekaGojira3k wrote:The Mist had giant monsters also.

The whole film has to do with horrors from a prehistoric dimension invading our world, so of course it counts...but I'm updating the one list I posted, over more posts of the same item.

Same here...although I do know there's at least one Godzilla-sized giant, a sort of 'quadruped Cthuhlu', that pops up in the film's third act. And The Mist aside, I've seen almost all the other films on my big list above...so if anyone has questions, please ask away.

Also...in my book, super computers with a large mass and sentient intelligence diffidently count as giant monsters...so does that mean the film Eagle Eye should be listed?

Wait, nevermind, that's pushing it, and Eagle Eye kind of blows.
