The editing comments are a bit worrisome, but I'll wait for a few more reviews before making my decision on a purchase.
The new Gamera will be worse than Super Monster.

Man, I'm SO glad I made a point to go see Death Kappa last night - I loved it! It was wacky, yes, and poked fun at everything, but I could feel just how much the filmmakers love the genre. It was the little things I loved - for example, all of the classic sound effects they used! I spotted too many to count. ^_^

I loved Hangyolas' design and his entire sequence, though I do wish there was a little more destruction. It was still a great homage (and parody!) of the classic films, IMO, and I loved every second of it. ^_^

I, for one, am definitely picking up the DVD this fall!

I really hope this is good. Haraguchi's previous directorial efforts failed to impress me.

I did enjoy Sakuya. But everything after that I have to agree.

I honestly think this will be a fun movie however.

Well I`m glad that somebody out there likes DEATH KAPPA...
As far as I m concerned it is one of the worst Daikaiju movie ever made ....

If you want to see something like that ...a parody and hommage that realy work ...watch GEHARAH....

This film is perfect to reaffirm the general public opinion that all Japanese monster movies are as bad as GODZILLA VS MEGALON...

A sad entry into the genre specially coming from someone I respect a lot TOMO HARAGUCHI ...welll you can t win them all...

To think of it...it`s even worse than MONSTER X STRIKES BACK and REBIRTH OF MOTHRA 2.
Right down there at the bottom of the barel with SUPER MONSTER GAMERA.

Well, I'll have to say a lot of people hated Monster X Attacks the G8 Summit, but I cracked up all through that thing. That might have had to do with how late it was being shown at G-Fest, but whatever. I'll give Death Kappa a chance, plus I need to have more blu-rays on my shelf. It might as well be a Kaiju blu-ray.

To the people who hate Death Kappa: Do you also dislike Monster X attacks the G8 summit? I absolutely can not stand the latter one and want to know if Death Kappa's roughly the same terrain.

And I'm one of the few, who LOVE Godzilla vs. Megalon btw...

Since the movie isn't out yet and has only been seen in several festival screenings no one can tell you that unless they went to the screening. Look at the trailer and judge for yourself.

Of course it is tongue-in-cheek goofing of. But that's all you can really say at this point.

That's really harsh and unfair, IMO. What did you expect walking in? It's clearly meant to be very tongue-in-cheek, lampooning not just daikaiju films but also horror (and possibly anime) as well. If you didn't want to see a wacky horror/sci-fi comedy, I honestly have no idea what to say.

Also, why would this reaffirm any public views toward daikaiju films? It's a COMEDY. It's obviously poking fun at the genre, nobody is meant to take this or its portrayal of daikaiju seriously. Anybody who watches Death Kappa and thinks, "Oh, this must be typical of all daikaiju films!", is totally missing the point.

I haven't seen Monster X yet, but I'll see if I can watch it tonight and compare the two for you.

And, to be honest, that's really all there IS to it. It's tongue-in-cheek, over-the-top, wacky, sci-fi/horror/comedy. It's a ridiculous premise, and the filmmakers had a ton of fun with it.

I'm not really surprised at the negative reviews. As I said earlier, I really don't think Haraguchi is a very good director (same with the majority of SPFX men turned directors). Hopefully this movie won't have the terrible pacing problems of his previous films. I look forward to checking it out but my expectations are in check for sure.

And my god, PLEASE let this be better than Monster X Strikes Back... I still don't know how that movie managed to suck. You have a reputable bringing back one of the craziest kaiju EVER in a spoof of the genre, and to top it off, its also got Takeshi Kitano... yet it was a steaming turd of a movie. Gehara is the only thing from the recent kaiju parody trend that seemed to get it right and that was just an indie short film.

Big Man Japan was pretty decent also, but that wasn't really a spoof on the genre as much as a weird, humorous new twist on it.

Agreed...I actually liked Big Man Japan more then alot of people but I can still admit it wasn't all that great...

Death Kappa...well...I've always had slightly low expectations myself, I hate the design of the Kappa...but I love the idea of the an irradiated Kappa becoming a kaiju...I think I'll prob feel this film is so-so when it's all said and done...doesn't mean I don't already have the blu ray pre ordered...a kaiju film is a kaiju film and at the very least it's gonna be worth having just so I can see where it all went wrong

Is this film just a bunch of jokes or is it a film that has a lot of things borrowed from old Kaiju films? The latter I can deal with and looking forward too. If its just one stupid joke after another and is distracting and makes the whole thing look way too dumb then i will not be pleased at all. I hate when people try and do this sort of thing and end up trying too hard so that it looks like they are trying to make a parody and be funny but that's not what they were aiming for. The audience thinks that they were but they weren't.

I saw DEATH KAPPA a couple of weeks ago. I knew beforehand that the film was made on a VERY tight budget and was intentionally over-the-top, and had adjusted my expectations accordingly.

Even so, this movie is awful. I have no problems with a low budget or a comedic treatment of the subject, but the most basic rules and techniques of filmmaking seemed to have been tossed out the window here... the editing, performances, and storytelling are terrible. DEATH KAPPA is a strong contender for the worst daikaiju film I have ever seen. Based on my first viewing (and I'm in no rush to sit through it again) it's worse than MONSTER X STRIKES BACK, and I thought MONSTER X was pretty bad.

KPA ....perfect review of that joke of a film......

It is a sloppy job of a film ...There is a couple of must have that films like that need to have ...just a example ....impressive first appearence of the monsters of main stars....Neirther Death Kappa or its opponent....the introduction of HYangiras or whatever his name is sooooooooo boring its incredible.

A good parody is based good on observation of the real thing ...this is what GEHARA does with class ...it is toungue in cheek but it hits the mark perfectly ...
This film and MONSTER X STRIKES BACK misses the nail on every try ...
WAY OFF and ambarassing...

But between the 2 ...At least MONSTER X has a superb Guilala costume and a few decent scene...THe same idea with a better director and it could have been a fine comedy and fun monsters movie.

To THE FLAME......I m a programmer of the FANTASIA FILM FESTIVAL in Montreal...Japanese science fiction films has been my passion since the age of 8...Every year I try to program every J SCFI I can ....And since 1996 I ve programmed over 25 Japanese kaiju films...
I ve decided to say NO to those 2 films because they are a diservice to the genre. There is a crowd in Montreal that comes and pay their tickets to see good films in that genre...And it is my resposability to keep them happy and coming back for more.....

A convention like G-Fest would be more appropriate because its hard core fans who wants to see everything anyway...
I myself is such a Guilala (the creature) fan that I was happy to see him back though very disapointed by the farce he was in ....

WANT TO SEE GOOD OLD STYLE DAIKAIJU??? WATCH ULTRAMAN films and series ...they are the last it its kind

So its just like Haraguchi's other films, only this one has bad jokes. Yay. The guy is brilliant with effects, but he's one of the biggest hack directors around.

By the way I just noticed that Death Kappa was written by the same guy that wrote MONSTER X... uh oh.

LOL... I still haven't watched MX Strikes back yet. I'm actually planning on watching it tonight. My expectations for that film are very low, and are now very low for DEATH KAPPA.... so hopefully I'll enjoy them now.

I actually don't mind these types of Kaiju films as long as there's at least a few good Giant Monster moments in them.

So is this available yet or what? I can not find it available yet anywhere. They all say preorder still. I thought it was out on July 27th. My local FYE always gets this stuff but I am not sure its out yet at all.

I just received this about my order from Amazon:

"Misato Hirata, Tomoo Haraguchi "Death Kappa (Ws Dub)"
Estimated arrival date: October 15 2010 - October 19 2010

We apologize for the inconvenience caused by this delay."

Even later date there...

OMG...OCTOBER now? Yeah, I just checked Amazon.com yesterday, and they had the date pushed back to September. What the hell? The company waits until the day of initial release to push it back for months? Classy...

I know the movie is supposed to be terrible, but I still want to see it!
