Daikaiju Gehara (2009)

Postby Enshohma » Tue Feb 17, 2009 11:00 pm

And once again, a new Japanese giant monster project passes with little-to-no notice of American fans because Godzilla is not in the title (cynical yes, but I had to say it);

It seems that the NHK network is doing either a TV movie or full-blown television series dubbed Daikaiju Gehara, and although details are unavailable, Gehara itself has a bipedal, long necked, dinosaurian design, but with long strands of black body hair that sheds off during his rampages.

Here are some images, from what few I could find:

Japanese site about a recent press conference (scroll down):

http://journal.mycom.co.jp/news/2009/02/15/001/

Full body design art can be found here:

http://www.nhk.or.jp/paphooo/project/gehara.html

UltramanLah's thread on the matter (need to be a member though, but then again, nothing new then what's been posted above):

http://ultramanlah.com/community/index. ... ic=18356.0

Now again, I'm in the dark as much as you guys will undoubtedly be, BUT if I find more information I'll share it all the same.

And although the design is a little off-putting, and not being a Godzilla project we're bound to get the one or more forum members with the tiresome "Looks Stupid and Sentai-ish, I'll Pass" mentality...for the rest of us less jaded readers, it's just good to know there's more then just Deep Sea Monster Raiga and Ultra Galaxy NEO to look forward to.

***********

There's also the live action Yatterman coming as well, but again when I post threads up, I get flack regardless...

This looks great! AND IT HAS SHIRO SANO IN IT!! :D

But yeah, looks like it has a better production values than Raiga, which I like (though I realize that film is a smaller indie piece, not something produced by the freakin' NHK).

Also, what is Shinji Higuchi's role in all this? I see him all over this but I can't figure out what he's actually doing...

I read about this last month in "Uchusen" magazine... 「長髪大怪獣ゲハラ」 (Chohatsu Daikaiju Gehara) or LONG-HAIRED GIANT MONSTER: GEHARA* is the full title.

This made for TV movie is yet another parody of the genre (one of the JSDF plans to stop Gehara is called "Operation Perm"!?), and was conceived and written by cult entertainer Jun Miura, and production helmed and supervised by visual effects wizard and director Shinji Higuchi for the NHK network. GEHARA was directed by visual effects artist Kiyotaka Taguchi, who recently produced the indie kaiju movie G, and will air in Japan on February 24th.

Here's the cast for GEHARA: Ken Osawa (Samurai Fiction) as Hideo Akihara, San Diego-born Mina Fujii as Momoko Akihara, Mitsuko Oka (Virus) as Tsuruko Akihara, Shiro Sano (Godzilla 2000) as Professor Mikami, Tomorowo Taguchi (Bullet Ballet) as the Shrine Priest, Kanji Tsuda (Gamera the Brave) as Kubo the Fisherman, Hiroyuki Watanabe (Ultraman Gaia) as JSDF Commander, Pierre Taki (Always: Sunset on Third Street) as the Tank Commander and comedian Terry Ito.

*Ghosts and monsters (Obake, Yurei and Yokai) with long hair have traditionally been considered scary by Japanese standards, as seen in films like KWAIDAN (1964) and EXTE (2007).

Perhaps it is another parody but it certainly looks to be a lot better than the new Guilala film!

I like the design of the monster. A made for TV movie.. another parody? Not really what I'm looking for, but I'll definately watch it if I'm giving the chance.

Monster looks like the emo Gyaos. Nice miniatures, though.

From personal experience by posting news about any non-Godzilla-related kaiju and tokusatsu project, I think I have more then the right to do so.

I can't even talk about old school American giant monster movies without some giving me the "Godzilla Kaiju are better" speech, yet alone the charcaters made outside Toho.

No, you don't really have the right to pre-emptively insult the members of the forum, or try to pick a fight in advance. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy and simply isn't necessary.

Relax. Your post and the news is obviously of interest to many here. More words have been typed about it in this thread alone than I've seen in the usual Japanese Godzilla fan boards. So apparently your issue isn't limited to "American fans".

I thought I'd try to nip-it-in-the-butt (for lack of a better term) before I get the usual "ewww, looks like stupid sentai...why would you even share this?" replies I've gotten in the past whenever I post any news of anything. I don't take back my original post, but you're right, it is just opening conflict beforehand, and I'll avoid such thinking in the future.

I appreciate the kind compliments too; I love giant monsters, Japanese and otherwise (even the Super Sentai / Power Ranger ones), and when I find obscurities to share, I do so. The positive feedback from some of the other posts have also been welcomed, and for those reading this, I thank you all as well.

I too like the unorthodox design, as hairy kaiju is kind of rare, let alone ones who do it right (Woo the ghost-mother-yeti-thing from Ultraman being one positive example). I hate to admit it though, and although the additional information from August is always welcomed, I'm disappointed to hear that Gehara will be a short television film over a more decent length one. But hopefully all goes well with it and it won't be the last we hear of Gehara.

I'm thinking 80's hair band right now. I wish Sci-Fi Channel would grab some of these movies. Throw all these shorts in 1 hour. I love short stories. On a lazy Sunday afternoon I'd love to watch these monster movies.

The hair concept is a little gross actually. It reminds me of when I stayed at a friends college and all the hair at the bottom of the shower drains. :puke:

Oh thats freaking disgusting...and I agree...it is rather nasty which is why I think the concept of the design is a cool idea. The hair is pretty repulsive which furthers my approval of this design and it's been a while since I've seen a new kaiju design that provoked much of a reaction from me one way or another.

The film was created because the program on NHK, PLAY TELEVISION: PERFORM!, solicited it to viewers. After more than 300 entries, GEHARA was the winner, and was subsequently produced by NHK. There were never any aspirations to make this feature-length.

The creator/writer Jun Miura has said that he'd like to do a sequel...

Are there any other hairy monsters?
