Read about this a few months ago in a Japanese magazine. But, RAIGA (meaning "Thunder Fang") is not a sequel to REIGO; rather it's part of Hayashiya's "Deep Sea Monster" Series. The same team is involved, as well as some of the same actors, and the monster suit looks terrific. Hopefully, it will be more fully realized than REIGO was.

The Raiga suit actor is veteran Mizuho Yoshida, who played Godzilla in GMK (among others).

Wait wait wait...back up a bit. Was REIGO ever released on R2 DVD?

This teaser for RAIGA was very entertaining! "Godzilla! Godzilla"... "No no no".. LOL

Thanks for clearing that up for us 'August'. Also @ 'Cookson'; I was told by Keith Akin of Sci-Fi Japan a while back that 'Reigo' had been touring in regional/limited screenings in Japan in smaller theaters for some time. It was also one of the films that didn't make the cut but was up for voting for the 'New York Asian Gran Prix' film festival this past year, so they are trying to get it screened here in the U.S..

Hopefully this one has more luck. Will look forward to seeing this one, as I am/have been with the other.

Like Avery mentioned, REIGO has been playing at festivals, events, and small theaters across Japan for months. There's even been some cool merchandising tie-ins. The movie is currently playing in Yokohama. As far as I know, distributor Intermedia Co. won't release the R2 DVD until the theatrical screenings have wound down.

Judging from the trailer, RAIGA looks much better FX-wise than REIGO because they're using the traditional monster suit and miniatures. REIGO has a lot of CGI but the filmmakers didn't have the budget to create convincing computer graphics. Going back to basic should really work in RAIGA's favor.

I saw REIGO at the American Film Market back in 2005 and at that time the original production company Option Inc gave me some great photos and production info for the film. At the 2008 AFM I spoke with REIGO's international sales agent Gold View Inc, and they gave me new photos and up to date info. I put it all together into an "everything you would ever want to know about REIGO" article that will run on SciFi Japan on Jan 1.

Wow, judging by that teaser and the pics, this looks like a blast. The Raiga suit looks awesome. This flick officially has priority on my radar.

Nice. Can you fill me in on what other monster roles he's played before? I know he was Zedus in Gamera the Brave, and I think I remember hearing he was one of the two actors in the Legion suit in Gamera 2.

This film looks fun...not going to break the mold but hopefully it will deliver at least on the level that the new Guiala film promised to but failed to deliver.

Not yet. Like many smaller, independent films, REIGO played "Roadshow" dates in various large cities in Japan, for limited runs. I've not heard of a DVD release (but, then again, I'm not following the film that closely).

Yoshida is a member of AAC Stunts and played Zeiram in both live action films by Keita Amemiya, as well as Death Ghidorah in REBIRTH OF MOTHRA and Dagara in ROM 2. He also played Cobra in KAMEN RIDER: THE FIRST, among others. For television, he played Mikazuki Rei (and other suit roles) in MIKAZUKI, Reigures in GARO and was a Panther Claw agent in Episode 4 of CUTEY HONEY.

Hope that helps!

BTW, a good friend of mine, Hidenori Onishi, who lives here in San Francisco, introduced me to one of his friends who was visiting here years ago, and recently told me that this guy is one of the producers of REIGO! Small world, huh?

Hey August,
So are you saying that Hayashiya has plans for more "Deep Sea Monster" movies that would be unrelated to each other?

Well, Morbid Angel did have a bonus track called "Terror Of Mechagodzilla" on the two-disc release of "Heretic"...

Hopefully the guy continues to make these films! Though, I'd rather him us "man-in-suit" instead of CGI... AND it'll be nice if he could try to come up with a monster that doesn't resemble Godzilla all that much.

Design is REALLY REALLY close to that of Godzilla. Lawsuit coming? Or will Toho let this one slip in good faith?

I don't think the "No, no, no!" joke is enough of a legal defense.

I hope the latter, because it does look interesting, and if Toho isn't gonna provide us kaiju films, then let the little guys do it in the mean time!
