The 2008 American Film Market is now taking place in Santa Monica, CA. The event features more than 400 movie companies from around the world and over 900 screenings of new films. A dozen or so Japanese studios and distributors— including Toho, Shochiku, Kadokawa, Toei, Nikkatsu, TBS, NTV, Gold View, Pony Canyon, and Fuji Television— are at AFM screening and promoting their recent and upcoming movies.
I was able attend some film screenings and speak with reps from most of the Japanese exhibitors, and have put together an overview of some of the movies that were shown and pitched at this year’s AFM.
Check out SciFi Japan for information, basic plot details, and English language promotional art for NTV/Toho’s big budget sci-fi release 20TH CENTURY BOYS, Shochiku’s MONSTER X STRIKES BACK and KITARO AND THE MILLENNIUM CURSE, TBS/Toho’s upcoming thriller PANDEMIC, the live-action adaptation of IKIGAMI, Toho’s DETROIT METAL CITY with Kenichi Matsuyama (DEATH NOTE) and Gene Simmons of KISS, J-Horror movies OROCHI and SHRILL CRIES OF SUMMER, Takashi Miike’s sci-fi comedy GOD’S PUZZLE, the Zatoichi revamp ICHI, NTV/Toho’s great 1940s adventure K-20: LEGEND OF THE MASK, and more.
