Matango question *spoiler*

Postby Rodanex » Tue Jul 29, 2008 7:53 pm

If Akira Kubo's character didn't eat any of the mushrooms, then why did he have fungus growing on his face in the final scene?

He probably ate the mushrooms during the trip home (there were probably some on the ship). He felt guilty for abandoning his mushroomed shipmates (and his love), feeling that he was better off staying with them on the island, than being confined to a quarantine in Tokyo.

I think he got accosted by one of the fully-transformed Matango. That might have been enough.

I haven't watched it from a while but I thought the dub implied that he gave up and ate some...

His dialogue at the close reveals that he gave in.

He states that he ate the Mushrooms.

I thought everyone knew this.

Only people that watched the movie.

Maybe there's a sub/dub version out there that doesn't make it clear? Beats me.

Oh...for some reason, I thought that he stated at the end that he was the only one who didn't eat any. I guess I misread the sub.

Seriously! One of the classic downbeat endings, already spelled out perfectly, and some people still don't get it!

Actually, on the Media Blasters dvd, the subtitles say that he never took a bite, then when he turns around (revealing his transformation in progress) he says "and for what purpose?!" instead of saying he ate them. This kind of implies that he turned into one even though he DIDN'T eat any, so there wasn't any purpose in avoiding them in the first place. MB usually sticks as close to the Japanese script as possible, so I think it might just be in the dub that he says he ate them

I thought that the fungus was probably in the air on the island so it just took longer to affect him than those who ate the mushrooms willingly.

"Right!"
That's it.
It seems more dramatic (ironic?) to me that he doesn't eat them and gets transformed anyway! :o

Media Blaster's subtitles aren't always 100% accurate -- I'll have to rewatch it now (what a pain, huh?).

So the lyrics in Kumi Mizuno's song may not be accurate? :(

I don't have the Media Blasters disc, but on the Japanese R2 his final lines are:

最後までキノコを食べなかったんです。一体何のために。
To the very end, [I] didn't eat the mushrooms. And for what reason!

Thanks, James -- that settles it! ! I was just going to watch that scene today -- now, I can watch something else, instead! :)

This was how I saw it. I think there are a few shots mid-way through the film where we see the mushrooms releasing spores into the air. That's if you look at it literally. Looking at it metaphorically, you could say that the monstrous transformation was a reflection of when the character's personality becomes monstrous. In Kubo's case that wasn't until he abandoned his girl at the end. What I find interesting about Matango is that the fully transformed people aren't violent; they just want people to join them. It's the partially transformed/non-transformed people who are violent, which suggests that the mushrooms were just an excuse for releasing the impulses they had all along.
