The X From Outer Space (Just saw it)

Postby jellydonut25 » Wed Aug 23, 2006 12:29 am

so, what's the skinny on this?
i mean, i enjoyed it (except for a couple parts listed below) but what's the deal with it? i mean, who directed/released/scored it? i thought the score was soooo wierd, it was like, at times, it was sooo out of place that it fit perfectly...
really liked the monster design a lot too and really only had a few complaints...
-when it starts the monster's kinda corrosive (hole in the floor/liquifying that hill when it first appears) but this is sorta dropped in favor of a more godzilla approach, that it feeds on energy, and the corrosion is just kinda completely dropped...
-how in the hell is lisa walking when the other dude barely did anything and could walk???that took me right outta the movie
-there were some not-to-scale shots during the scene of Guilala chasing the car that coulda been done a lot better
-the shower scene was a big TEASE!

seriously though, the movie wasn't too too bad, but it's not anywhere near perfect, it suffers from almost as much half-developed plot as the millenium godzilla movies which leaves it somewhat unsatisfying at the end...(they've given up on mars? lisa just completely drops her love? the two girls are like best buds all of a sudden? they never plan to investigate the ufo?)...it also suffers from bad lines such as..'we would need to study it in a vacuum such as on the moon base' "ive got it! the moon base!"
but for filming the monster scenes, there were a lot of really neat camera angles that i liked a lot...
a solid **1/2 outta four, but really no better...

There was a nice Japanese R2 DVD set thet featured a booklet, a nice Guilia toy and the DVD with extra features and with a English dub. Sadly, it's OOP.

I completely agree with, Jellydonut25, despite its obvious flaws it manages to shine through as a simple, fun, B sci-fi movie and probably wasn't setting out to be anything more than that...a solid **1/2 out of 4 *s from me as well (despite the shower scene being the mere tease it is! )

This is a very fun movie. I remember a few years ago when it used to come on cable all the time. It was insane! You just said to yourself "I'll bet X from Outer Space is on," and you'd channel surf and it would be!

Kinda the same thing with the Pink Panther movies right now. I'm watching 'em for the first time and I haven't rented a single video or tape. Every couple of days another one of the series will come on. Isn't digital cable great?!

Taku Izumi, who also scored vintage anime shows such as Space Boy Soran and The Wandering Sun.

I have that Guilala figure, got it from an ebay auction some time ago. Nice, accurate detail, although it feels like solid plastic and no articulation. It's heavy, too.

I just saw this today for the first time in years. It's one of those once-every-few years kind of movies.

Ilove the silly loungy music, the cocktail parties, and toy-store look of everything. Lots of fun.

But the movie's basically a mess, and man, it gets noisy. :?

And face it, Guilala is a hoot. :P

Here's a video someone made and posted at youtube.com. Basically it's 3 1/2 minutes of Guilala rampage scenes set to pop music. See it for the scenes, it plays like a fun trailer if nothing else. :P

Was I the only one who LOLed at the Shower scene between the two women?

One of them drops the soap, then as if they answered my thoughts she just kicks the soap away....!

No. The R2 has English dubbing if you want it, though.

Thread necromancy! I summon you to revive!

Finally had the opportunity to watch this. I acquired a copy off ebay, and the quality is ok. It's an english dub, and nothing else.

If there's one thing I will take away to remember from this movie, its the music. It's just too weird to describe. It's inappropriately appropriate, or appropriately inappropriate, depending on how you look at each scene. None of it is really good, but it is memorable.

That blonde is pretty cute. :)

It was more like, not answering my thoughts...in my version, when a woman drops the soap, the other one helps to get it and then they bathe each other...

I have a DVD (probably a boot of the R2), but it has Japanese and English audio. I also have the Orion VHS. I probably wont get the Janus Films DVD because the other 3 films dont interest me. I've seen Goke on Hulu, its just not my cup o' tea.
There are no more good TV Shows, only ones that haven't disappointed me yet.

Borrowed the new Eclipse DVD from a co-worker (who is into Kaiju).
Looks great!

The story was a tad odd, and I agree about the whole Lisa leg thing.
I mean she was running not ten minutes later...
The ending is very "Gamera" like (hey let's shoot it back into space!)

I also borrowed the sequel from Netflix.
You know Monster X Strikes Back Attack the G8 Summit.

Boy what a random movie!
LOLed a lot at the over the top portrayal of the various world leaders.
Plus the whole Take-Majin thing...

BTW I swear they blatantly ripped off the "Godzilla March" theme from most the Godzilla movies.

Did they have permission to mention both Varan & Baragon?

There was a scene showing some TV interviews when Guliala shows up in Monster X Strikes Back Attack the G8 Summit.
One guy was like "I'm glad this monster showed up, but kinda wish it was either Varan or Baragon". The guy kinda reminded me a bit of the "hippie" looking guy in Godzilla vs Gigan (the one that had the corn wrapped in foil).

I'll be the latest to revive this zombie thread and some of its cringe worthy commentary

I just watched the Criterion release of this last night and was thrilled with the picture quality. I do have a habit (honed by having a young kid in the house) of having subtitles or CCs running. What i found interesting was that the dialogue between the dub and sub were pretty wildly different throughout. While the subtitles dont fix all the issues, it certainly feels a lot more intelligent than what went out in the international dub.
