Hey everyone!

Yours truly and our very own Mouth For War (Byrd) have started a Godzilla and all-things Kaiju related podcast. You can check out our Facebook page in my signature and our podcast here - https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/kai ... 09095?mt=2

We hope to bring you news, behind the scenes pics, toy reviews, and some other cool stuff. You'll also get to listen to me hilariously (and unintentionally) butcher various Japanese names (and some English ones!)...plus we just have a jolly old time. Check it out!

I know John Agar has a main role in the John Ford/John Wayne movie She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, and Agar's presence has really been the only reason I've avoided it.

--- EDIT ---

Maybe a third type in your "once you're out of your teens you become one of these two types of fan" is someone who becomes more of a fan of the genre than just a fan of Godzilla. For example: while I find I lot of the Godzilla's made in the '90s and '00s to be lacking, I love the Gameras and (now that I'm seeing them) the Ultraman stuff. I also have come to appreciate miniature work in old Hollywood films and stuff like Thunderbirds.

I'm probably in that phase now myself (even though I actually like the Heisei era and some of the Millennium stuff, I can agree it was not close to Showa quality). I also really appreciate the miniatures. I recently caught some Ultraman 80 eps and was really impressed with the miniature work. The same can be said for the recent Ultraman X, and honestly I've never fancied myself much and an Ultraman fan but am now kinda becoming one. I really dig the practical effects. Ultra Galaxy is also great, but that's because I love Gomora. :P

Cool man, hope you enjoy. 8 hours is a long drive. I hope to make it to G Fest eventually - going to Fandom Fest this year because of the guests (Godzilla suit actors, Ultraman, and Nishikawa was just announced) but I will trek out to Chicago eventually.

Here is the latest episode - http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/ta ... 678&cmd=tc

We cover our experiences at G Fest and Fandom Fest, plus the latest news about the Wanda merger with Legendary and the "whitewashing" controversy with The Great Wall movie. This was my favorite episode yet since I get to fanboy out about meeting the Godzilla suit actors.

NEW EPISODE: Kaiju Transmissions welcomes its first Guest of Honor by welcoming (all the way from Japan!) writer/director/critic/translator/photographer Norman England to the show! As many fans know, Norman wasn't only the director of the Bringing Godzilla Down To Size documentary, but he's also spent MANY hours on Japanese film sets, including Gamera 3 and many of the Godzilla films (in addition to countless other Japanese genre films). In this first part of a two part interview, Norman shares many stories from his 100+ days working with the Toho crews, as well as his experience making what is arguably the definitive Godzilla documentary. In addition to that Norman also tells us about several books he's working on, nationalism, his thoughts on Shin Godzilla, and misconceptions that fans have about Japan. But first, we discuss Norman's inexplicable love of Howard the Duck and what it was like seeing movies in the torn down grindhouse theaters of 42nd Street in New York City back in the 80s.

Interesting, im looking forward to part 2. The highlight was his brief talk about the upcoming Godzilla animation, the low point was saying that not liking Shin Godzilla was equivalent to speaking out against the Iraq War post 9/11.

I do think that "Shin Godzilla = Nationalism" is just as reductive as "Gojira = Nuclear Bomb" - it ignores all nuance of the film and gets hung up almost entirely on a few lines regarding Article 9 in the first act of the film. In fact I would say that most of what people point to as "nationalism" would be better characterized as "humanism", in which case I see Shin Godzilla has more in common philosophically with American monster films like Pacific Rim than with other Godzilla films like Monster Zero.

Yeah. I understand where the participants are coming from, and there's a wealth of information here, but some of the dots connected seem a bit tenuous, and elements of the film that contradict the thesis ignored - there's a bit of discussion of that in the Shin political analysis episode, but it's hand waved away.

And besides: if Anno made a nationalistic film Hayao Miyazaki wouldn't allow him to hang out anymore!

We cover quite about the nationalism of Shin in our review episodes (one is a review; the other is all about the politics). Suffice to say, I doubt anyone who likes the movie and thinks Shin is simply nuanced about nationalism will agree with our point of view about the film. ;)

We do have a King Kong sized interview with a certain actress "escaping" in the near future, so as soon as the details are worked out, please look for that. Also, I'm horrible at puns, but I am really looking forward to it.

Anyway. enjoy the second and final part of our interview with Guest of Honor Norman England!

NEW EPISODE: For the second part of our interview, director/writer/critic/translator/photographer Norman England tells us all about the art of subtitling, working with Takashi Miike on the film Yakuza Apocalypse, his time working with Sushi Typhoon, being an American film critic in Japan, Japan's treatment of foreigners, the Japanese film industry, why he isn't currently directing another film, and the amount of effort that goes into making a movie. We also touch on Star Trek, Planet of the Apes, and the time Norman found a rare Son of Godzilla poster tacked to a wall in the middle of nowhere!

NEW EPISODE! GODZILLA SPEAKS! On a very special episode, Matt and Nick Poling (of The Monster Report) sat down with suit actor and stuntman Tom Kitagawa! Kitagawa is best known for playing Godzilla in five of the six Millennium series films, playing King Ghidorah in Mothra 3, and playing many of the heroes in Toei's Sentai series. Recorded at the Days of the Dead convention in Indiana, Matt and Nick chat with Mr. Kitagawa about his start in Battle Fever J, stunt work on the Sentai shows, the challenges of playing Godzilla, working in TV vs film, winding down after a long shoot, recovering from his recent surgery, and more!

I never even knew Kitagawa or Nakajima going to be in the Midwest! Shame, it's like a four hour trip to Indy. Pissed I missed it.

Kaiju Transmissions Podcast
Title: Unmade Kaiju Movies with Author John Lemay!
Episode Notes: Byrd and Matt welcome special guest, author John LeMay ("The Big Book of Japanese Giant Monsters" book series) on the podcast to discuss kaiju movies that almost were! It seems almost as if for every Godzilla movie that got made, there are several scripts for other movies that never saw the light of day. John's newest book, "The Big Book of Japanese Giant Monsters: The Lost Films" details that very subject. We talk to John about his book, his beginnings as a writer, the process of writing the book, and why he's so drawn to the topic of unmade films. Then we also talk our favorite unmade Godzila/kaiju projects, and the ones we would have liked to see the most. We talk about infamous lost projects like Mothra vs Bagan, Godzilla vs Batman, and the proposed Toho/Hammer co-production Nessie, as well as obscurities such as Japan SOS, Bride of Godzilla, and Godzilla vs. M. We also debunk some common myths along our way. So listen up, relax and learn about the Godzilla movies we ALMOST had!
