Kaiju no Kami Presents...

Postby Dr Kain » Mon Jan 19, 2015 6:37 pm

All right, I've got everything I need to start doing the Godzilla reviews I have been wanting to do for the last year. As such, here is my short introductory video under the Youtube channel Kaiju no Kami. Please let me know if it plays because this is also a test to make sure I am going to be able to post my reviews on Youtube. Oh yeah, and I know it isn't edited perfectly, but this is my first time ever using video editing software and doing this kind of thing. As such, it is going to be a while before I perfect it.

Definitely keep the "Blofeld-esque cat petting" in every single video.

I'd like to see a better intro than the text scroll (not that i have any suggestions on how it could be improved but it feels like it belongs in in the early 90s.)

That is odd. For some reason Gmail made me verify my account through a text message.

BTW Klen, the reason the text scrolls like that is I was mimicking the text for the original Godzilla movie. I'm not going to do it every episode and that is something I'm going to work on when I do my first review.

Thanks. :D

Given that I know your opinions, I'm actually pretty curious, as I honestly think you can take things out of context from each movie and fit them to whatever your particular opinions are, so I'm curious to see how good a job you do at arguing your distaste for certain Showa films and love for the Heisei era.

My one comment would be to work on your flow. If you're going to be intersplicing video clips, then it doesn't all need to be one take, so you can re-record parts where you stumble and such.

Also, no idea what "Kaiju no Kami" means.

Yeah. That is one of the things I think may come off better in words than text, especially when I can showcase in words at the exact spots when something works or does not work for me.

I learned that yesterday about splicing video can help with doing different takes. I was trying to complete everything in one go, so I ended up doing 16 takes. Of course, it was also a lot harder to get in front of hte camera than I thought. I would hit record, go to my chair, and then just stare at the camera for a few minutes before doing anything. This weekend I hope to watch the original movie so I can start working on my script for my review.

Forgot to tell you that I'm definitely going to keep the Blofeld aspect, I'm just not sure if I will do it for every video. Right now, I'm not sure if it will work for what I have planned out for the original movie, but we'll see. If nothing else, the "cat" will be back in time for GTTHM.

Anyway, I've watched the movie, recorded the lines I am going to say over scenes from the movie, so all I have left to do is rip the movie to my computer (and the jokes I am adding in), record the live bits, and then edit it all together. Oh yeah, and then make the credits. My hope is to have the first movie's review out by the beginning of Feb, if not sooner. It depends on how many days I end up working next week.

Here it is, my first review, Godzilla:

phpBB [media]

I think I am going to go out and buy a video editing program as I was having a lot of trouble with Movie Maker on this. There are still some random second shots I initially thought would have worked but now I wish I had realized it before I rendered everything since they were merged with the audio. Oh well. I have a better idea for what I am going to do next time if I do use Movie Maker again.

Anyway, tell me what you think as despite my issues editing it together, I had a lot of fun making this. Hopefully it doesn't get flagged.

EDIT: New version uploaded with some additional edits and audio levels are hopefully more balanced.

I like the b&w, the sound levels were a little all over the place. I would prefer to see a little extra time on a "conclusion" of pros/cons, even at the cost of the recap time, since as Godzilla fan i have seen the movie enough times.

And a better editing program would help you as well. There were a few cuts that seemed off that could have been edited correctly on a better program.

The sound is something I'm going to have to work on to see if I can get them leveled fully. It is better in that version than they were previously though.

Recap time is just going to very upon movie's length, what is important, etc. As for the conclusion, my current version of my conclusion for GRA is a little bit lengthier, but maybe I will just add some exact pros and cons even though I do kind of go through them during the recap portions. We'll see. I am working on GRA right now.

I'm still looking into a better editing program, but I wanted to get to work on GRA immediately for some strange reason. Plus, I might have to wait until I get my tax return to get that.

Thanks for the feedback.

Here is my review for Godzilla Raids Again. I tried a few new things compared to what I did to the last video, so let me know if you liked them or not. I'm still trying to figure out how to boost the audio though as it seems like even if I have the audio on full it lowers when I render the video.

EDIT: Hopefully this version it does not get claimed. -_-

I watched both vids. I'd echo the comments above about what improvements can be made - the audio levels need a little work and I think the editing can be tightened up. Sometimes a scene switch between you commenting and a movie clip is either too long or a little rushed. I like the black and white vibe. I thought the Baysplosions bit for GRA was funny. I also think extending your comments at the conclusion of each video is a good idea - I think GRA had a better wrap up than G54 did. You do a good job nailing the main plot points for each movie...it was kinda nice to see everything laid out in a concise and easy to follow manner. I hope that helps.

I did like the improvements for GRA, but audio seems to be at two different levels. (lower when you are talking over footage and higher when you are on screen.) Looking forward to Kong review

Yeah, like I said, i'm having some issues with the audio levels. I'm hoping to have that fixed in the next video, but we'll see.

As for the clippings, I thought I had gotten them all, and then when I found more, Movie Maker locked me out of editing the footage in the second half of the review for some reason. It is very frustrating so I might hold off on KKvsG until I do get something better. I'm looking at Sony's Vegas since two of my friends, one who is a computer engineer recommended it and one who does MLP reviews, recommended it.

Right now, my plan is to also show some comparisons between both versions of KKvsG.

Curious question, do you guys think I should keep the hat or ditch it? I was going to ditch it since my next review is going into color, especially since I am borrowing it from a friend, but he said that I should use it in every video.

I'd say keep the hat for Showa or at least through DAM. It seems appropriate considering the fashions of the era.

I like this idea, especially if you find a way to play up the "Godzilla won in Japan!" rumor. But comparing the differences (especially in the scores and the dumb American reporting) seems fun.

The hat works with the black and white and may not be as appropriate in color. I can only think testing a few shots to see what you like is the best option.

Also, might I suggest you tackle a few films like Rodan and Mothra? Rodan is the first color monster movie for Toho and you can certainly talk about the significance of Mothra and how Toho began pairing up monsters with Godzilla...much like they did in KKvsG. Just a thought.

I plan to review Rodan and Mothra in the future, but not for the time being.

Also, I already planned on tackling the truth behind the "Godzilla defeating Kong" falsehood that people seem to think is true.

So I bought Sony Vegas and my god, I am loving the options so far. There is an Old Film filter that I wish I had had for my original Godzilla review.

Also, I can merge video screens, the audio is kept separate from the video on all tracks, man, this is going to be awesome. I won't have to use the voice recorder now so my audio shouldn't be changing volume since I can just record everything on camera and just show the audio for some of the bits. Friday I don't work so I'm going to start working on KKvsG then.

First review from using Sony Vegas is up. For some reason some of the credits repeated themselves and I'm not sure why, whatever.

As always, let me know what you think.

Fantastic! I noticed no audio or video issues that had been on your last videos.

Although it looks like you repeated some of your credits. After the copyright it repeats music from kaijucombat.com and listing off Cruellica Kain, your friends, etc.

Yeah, I mentioned that above. :D

I have no idea what happened there, but oh well.

As for the audio issues, that is because Sony Vegas lets me use the audio from video files as it splits the audio and video into different channels. As such, I was able to record everything in front of the camera and just muted the video while keeping the audio turned on.

I have to say that despite a few nOOb issues, I had no problems with Vegas at all.

Oh yeah, if you live outside of the US, I put up an edited version of the video that took out two areas where I was hit with copyright claims that blocked the video from everywhere else. I have no idea why, but whatever. You can find it under my channel and I haven't been hit with any claim on it yet, so all should be good.
