4 - Godzilla vs. Monster Zero

EDIT: I have to put Destroy All Monsters tied at 5. Still a childhood favorite.

In chronological order
Gojira

Godzilla vs Gigan
Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla

Although lately I'm likely to watch something outside of that list. Those are my top picks.

1) Gojira
2) Mothra vs. Godzilla
3) Monster Zero
4) Son of Godzilla
5) Ghidorah: The Three-Headed Monster
The rest of the top 10... I'm less sure about the order, but it consists of: Godzilla vs. Biollante, King Kong vs. Godzilla, Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster, Godzilla vs. Gigan, and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla.
As you can see, I'm a definite Showa-booster, and you'd have to go into the top 15 to get more films past the original series in my list (though Gareth Edwards might change that).

1. Godzilla (Godzilla, King of the Monsters) [1954] - It's kind of hard to dethrone a film which has spawned the franchise and is approaching infallibility. It's not my favorite movie, but I really appreciate it for launching the series and its cultural/historical significance.
2. Godzilla vs. Biollante [1989] - This movie nails what a post Godzilla-world would look like. Godzilla might be the driving antagonizing force, but the real monsters in play were the human characters trying to use Godzilla's powers to their own devices (Saradian Government, Bio Major, Dr. Shiragami, Gondo, etc). I love this movie, it always has my attention whenever it's on. One of the few Godzilla movies that feels like anyone could die at any moment.
3. The Return of Godzilla (Godzilla 1985) [1984] - This film did an exceptionally good job of revamping Godzilla to a new nuclear/cold war era. The plot feels global in scope, and the sonic device/Godizlla-bird connection feels ahead of its time. I really enjoy the Super X fights, but it sort of feels too fantastical in this movie (it was probably included to show how great Japan was as a nation, at that time at least). Some of the effects are a little inconsistent and I wish they had made a better Cybot or stuck with the suit for all of the scenes.
4. Mothra vs. Godzilla [1964] - This was my first Godzilla movie, so I'm a little biased in this regards. The message is well crafted and relevant today. This film set the high water-mark/template for the serialization of Godzilla v. 'X' more than King Kong did, in my opinion. The effects are really great and CONSISTENT (which is more important in my book).
5. Terror of Mechagodzilla [1975] - For how outlandish this movie is, it's really a melodramatic, character driven movie. It is VERY cheesy, but in a good way. Also as the cap to the Showa series it really captures the spirit of the franchise to that point. This was the first Godzilla movie I ever saw on the big screen, it was before I could read, and it was in Japanese. It was still awesome.

Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla
Destroy All Monsters
Terror of Mechagodzilla
Godzilla
Mothra vs Godzilla
Biollante comes close, but the classic films top it for me. Mechagodzilla takes #1, the others are in no particular order. I will say though that Godzilla and Mothra vs Godzilla are the better made films of my list.

My reasons for my Top 5:
1 - Godzilla vs. Mothra '64 - the very first Godzilla movie I ever saw as a five year old in a movie theater in Boston. Great story, great characters, etc. Of course though, at five years old, I thought nothing except that this movie is awesome.
2 - Godzilla '54 - Had to put the one that started it all here because it's still a very powerful movie and because of its place now in pop culture history.
3 - GTTH
4 - GvsMZ - Along with GvsM '64, these three movies represent the true high point of the Showa Godzilla movies. Each movie stands very well on its own and we get to see the monsters and the human characters at their best. Superb work by everyone associated with these three movies.
5 - Godzilla vs. Gigan - I loved Godzilla vs. Gigan before I even saw the movie. I first saw Gigan in Ian Thorne's Godziila book and immediately thought he was an awesome looking monster. It was titled Godzilla on Monster Island back then on TV, but I never missed an airing. (like all the G movies back then) Cool characters and monster battles, I still love it.
5a - Destroy All Monsters - THE Godzilla movie to watch growing up. This would've been my #1 movie if I did this list as a 7-12 year old. Monster action from beginning to end. What was then my favorite Godzilla suit. I loved this movie then and I still love it now. Didn't care for the women as alien invaders, but overall, so what. This was DAM, and I got to see a bunch of monsters in one movie. (and a few I hadn't seen yet in their respective movies)

One would be quite confused on the differing titles if one was not a Godzilla fan! Anyhow -
1 DAM (AIP version)
2. Monster Zero
3. Ghidrah, The Three-Headed Monster
4. Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster (AIP version)
5. Godzilla vs. The Thing

1. Godzilla (1954)
2. Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964)
3. Monster Zero (1965)
4. Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989)
5. Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack! (2001)
(Although I wouldn't be surprised if 4 and 5 switch with Godzilla vs. Hedorah or Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla 74. Because it sort of just depends on my mindset)
I wonder if the Legendary Godzilla will end up breaching this list.
