I hope that this will spark a healthy discussion....
I was thinking about the instances in which Japanese kaiju have been portrayed on-screen actually eating human beings. I remember chuckling when I saw the old Aurora model kit of Godzilla which had red "blood" paint on his hands/claws and his mouth. However, I don't think there has ever been a scene in which Godzilla ate anyone.
But in GAMERA vs BARUGON, there is a specific scene in which the villain of the film, who tries to escape with a giant diamond, is grabbed by Barugon's tongue and then sucked into his mouth and the mouth/jaws closing. That's pretty graphic. In GAMERA vs GYAOS, the reporter in the woods was picked up by Gyaos and you saw his teeth and jaw moving up and down in the act of "eating" him. This is also repeated later in the film when Gyaos held a bunch of people in his hand and then munching on them.
In FRANKENSTEIN CONQUERS THE WORLD, there's the scene of the dead rabbit in the schoolroom. OK, not a human being, but kind of graphic. There was a narrative that Frankenstein was eating human beings, but it turned out to be Baragon. Although not pictured, there is the inference that Baragan ate the people at the mountain lodge since no bodies were found after the event. We certainly know that Baragan had a taste for chicken, seeing the feathers fly out of his mouth.
With Toho, I think only in WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS do we see a specific scene where a monster eats a human being. That would be Gaira reaching in and grabbing a woman out of the airport building and literally putting her into his mouth and munching away. He would then spit out her dress (in the US version)...or something we don't see in the Japanese version. There are also several inferences that Gaira ate the sailors off the ship that he sank ("clothes all chewed up") and the couple who were in the canoe on the lake which Sanda sees their clothes next to Gaira before attacking him.
In GAMERA GUARDIAN OF THE UNIVERSE, there is the inference that Gyaos ate people...the pen and glasses found in Gyaos' feces and the broken cassette player from the attack on the subway. But eating people is never shown.
Can you think of any other scenes in which people are actually EATEN by Japanese Giant Monsters?
