Introducing People to the Franchise Movie Order

Jared and I committed a horrible blasphemy by introducing a mutual friend with Gigan AND Megalon (the latter on the big screen in 35mm!).


Gigan is the best work of fiction ever wrought by the hands of man, but outside that I'd start with the original (of course), even making allowances for KotM since it's so accessible. In fact, I'd almost recommend KotM first until your friend has an appreciation for the history and culture that led up to the original movie.

Other then that, pick the Honda essentials from the '60s (Mothra vs. Godzilla, Ghidrah, and MZ), some Fukuda funsies (Sea Monster and MechaGodzilla) and some good modern Godzy movies (G2000 and GMK). Final Wars if they like dumb crap.

I think those are the essentials!

It's funny, but anyone over 35 got introduced to these movies in the most random way possible, by them airing on TV or showing up in the theaters. my first two movies were KING KONG VS GODZILLA followed by GODZILLA VS THE SMOG MONSTER, and that's all it took to make me a fan for life. Seeing them in order of release wasn't an option, and it really didn't matter- we were just happy any were on TV at all.

I'd say let your friends pick the ones they want to watch.

it would really depend on the person. If they are used to foreign films I'd start with Gojira, otherwise King of the Monsters.

Then I'd hit Godzilla vs Mothra for more serious people or G vs Gigan for people that like things a bit more lighthearted

From there I would hit GMK to show a more recent film that has mass appeal...

from there we get a little crazy, depending on their reaction to the 2nd 3rd film we either go G vs KK or GxMG

My cousin is just getting into Godzilla, and with him I just either ask him what monster he wants to see more of, or send the films with the most monsters his way.

The easiest person who ever became a Godzilla fan in my experience was my little cousin who watched them with me since he was 5.

He's 13 now, and he's itching for news on the new movie.

If I was going to introduce the series to kids, like if I had a son or something, I would start with one of the softer ones like King Kong Vs. Godzilla or Son of Godzilla.

If I am introducing the series to anyone my age, I would immediately start with the first one, and from there, if we didn't go in exact order, I'd cover the big ones like Mothra Vs. Godzilla, Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster, Destroy All Monsters, & the Mechagodzilla movies.

Most of my converts have been through the Millennium movies. The Kiryu films and Final Wars typically do it, oddly enough. I work backwards from there...
