This thread needs to be revived! I just got back from Japan and one of the many souveneirs (i have a feeling I'll be saying that a lot as I post my stuff in the various appropriate threads...) is a collection of three old picture books I found in a shop in Akihabara. The clerk told me they were missing a slip cover type case and the bindings are getting delicate, but after talking him down to 1200 yen, i thought i still got a good deal. Anyway, the books are each about the size of a postcard and around 130 pages. There is some text, but for the most part each page is a picture. Some near the front are in color, while the majority of each book is black & white. I assume these are from the mid '70's as they cover all the films up through Godzilla vs. Gigan. There are some really interesting pictures that I had never seen before, so here's a sampling! (sorry for the thumbnails, the images were just too big for the forum & i didn't feel like resizing them)

If anyone is up for it. I would love to see some images from ATRAGON (particularly any and all images with MANDA) (1963) or Space Amoeba/Yog - Monster from Space (1970)... possibly Dagora, The Space Monster (1964) and lastly some Varan stuff (yeah I saw the one page - just wondering if there are more out there).

Can anyone provide me with images of Monsterland/Monster Island? I heard that Ed Godziszewski had some in his book and I would love to see them (something about a possible overview).
I isolated some images of it. striped away the darkness/grime and have a pretty nice look at what the Islands that make up Monsterland/Monster Island(s) looks like from way above.
ORIGINAL IMAGE - MILDLY LIGHTENED
Image
MY MORE ISOLATED IMAGE - with Island labels and a general key.
Image
Is the map table in the Monster Island Control Center (DAM) the same map they used to do the pan down?

Did you guys do anything on Godzilla's home island like this?
I found one post on the subject of the "Islands" but it was limited to what I already knew.

Irregardless - great images throughout this posting.

There is a cutaway illustrated picture of Ogasawara floating around in some of the older Godzilla books where it showcases the various bases and ports both above and below the island as well as the various habitats of the monsters. Really a wealth full of knowledge in that image alone if you can find it.

Also, I believe it was Jim Walsh who had a site devoted to Ogasawara which was very informative and had great pictures, however, last I visited the site was probably 1997 or 98' so I highly doubt it is still around.

Was it Ed's book... the unbelievably hard (or expensive) to get Encyclopedia?

or is it a different book? that can be ordered?

I guess the biggest question is. Is it advocated by TOHO (I.E. Offical) or is it just a Godzilla Fan thing?

Just curious.

No, in old Godzilla book I am meaning one of the tons and tons of Godzilla book that came out when the Heisei series was still starting up in Japan.

And since it was an official book, then yes, the pic was also official.

Also, there were numerous childrens books showcasing the kaiju of Monster Island, like this one which has pretty bad artwork but the books Godzilla like to Roar and Who's afraid of Godzilla present beautiful artwork.

GREAT website full of BIG resolution images of all kinds of movie posters. :D

The link above takes you to their Destroy All Monsters collection, click on the images for bigtime fun. Includes four great images of Godzilla in New York Harbor, Barag...er, Gorosaurus in Paris, Godzilla & Son on the way to battle, and Rodan in Moscow.

Yeah it is pretty damn sweet!

Are there more like it anywhere?

Though I don't know if it is suppose to be Manda or not... the logo to SciFiJapan rocks in a Manda-way!

Here is a pic I did of the Mandas together. (it is from early last year - just enhanced unfinished pencils).

That's some pretty cool stuff there, but a lot of it's pretty wonky--check out the Italian poster for Godzilla vs. Gigan. None of the cast is correct (IMDb searches turn up no matches for "Lee Hunther" or "Lilli Folker"), and Ishiro Honda is credited as director. I was aware of the German titles referencing Frankenstein, but King Kong's name and likeness are popping up in unexpected places too.

I'd seen the first of those American Rodan posters before, but the second one is even goofier. He looks like he's horrified! :D

 Reminds me of Scooby Doo.

Yeah, the kaiju stuff is hit or miss, but there is such a wealth of insane poster art there from other genres. The blaxploitation posters are priceless.

A post in the toy section got me to wondering. Does anyone have pics of the unused "Fire Monster" Godzilla suit from 1957? And was there an Anguirus suit too? I was never sure if it was one or two new suits...

There are quite a few pictures out there but sources escape me as to where to find them. I believe only the Godzilla suit was recreated. I do know that the suits disappeared after the studio shut down in 1957 and are probably sitting in some warehouse somewhere in Califonia...whats left of them anyway.

Here is a shot of a model of the suit.

I really dig those suits. The Goji pictured there is so much better than the first one from GRA. I like how he's the 'missing link' (literally) between the '55 and '62. The only thing I don't care for are the three toes instead of four, but it's all good.

I just stumbled across this oddity quite by accident:

I can't seem to find any background on it, but I think it's pretty darn cool.

Wow, that's freaky!

The text says "The Strongest Monster in History," with itemized explanations of the various parts...the coolest of which would have to be the Daimajin-helmet-wearing King Kong head!

Or maybe the Ultraman-eyed Godzilla?

Nah, it's gotta be Kong wearing Daimajin's helmet for the win!

Where did you find that pic?

So... a combination of Godzilla, Ultraman, King Ghidorah, Daimajin, King Kong, Rodan, Red King, Baltan... wow. I don't recognize the tail and tail eyes, though.

The body is Gappa's, the wings are Rodan's, the arms are Red King's, note the shield plates of Kemular (from Ultraman) on the back and Ragon's fins around the neck, the legs are Gamera's, the tail is Gomora's, and the eyes are from a Japanese folk monster, I think.
