TALKBACK: Godzilla (1998)

Got into a truly bizarre Facebook argument over the weekend with a guy who was insisting that GINO has exactly the same plot as Alien (though his summary of that plot took into account events from both Alien and Aliens), and therefore that "shitting on" GINO's plot meant also "shitting on" Alien's plot. He refused to accept my argument that any details that happen between the plot points he was correllating could possibly have any impact on whether or not a movie is any good.

I haven't watched GINO in a good decade-and-a-half, but I was considering revisiting it the night before seeing GODZILLA for the first time (kind of like rage therapy). I don't know if I could rewatch it all the way through though. MST3k said it best, "They just didn't care..."

I watched it for the first time in a long while over the weekend (probably since it first came out on BD in the USA back in 2009). It's still as cliched and hokey (in a mediocre way) as any generic '90s Hollywood summer blockbuster movie that I remember, a lot of the cg effects haven't aged well at all, and its frequent scenes and musical hints of Jurassic Park envy are painfully obvious. Not to mention all of the annoyingly bad jokes that were stuffed from front to end into it. That being said, admittedly in my opinion the creature design for the title monster in of itself isn't bad. I know it's been said a thousand times over the years already: it's a fairly cool looking monster, but it's just not Godzilla.

I drank along with Kaijucast for a drunk commentary in what (barring my own commentary if that ever happens) will more than likely be the last time I ever watch this movie and...I'm hammered.

This is a bias that exists because of the human brain and it's penchant for focusing on faces, but I think a lot more people would have liked or accepted the Godzilla design in this movie if his face was more classic looking.
