I was 5 or 6 when Godzilla 1998 was released. I had been a Godzilla fan since I was about 2 or 3, growing up mainly on the Jun Fukuda films and reruns of the Hanna-Barbera cartoon. So Godzilla was my hero. Naturally I was very excited for the 98 film, I don't remember being caught up in the Independence Day hype, I don't even remember seeing ID4 at that point, for me at that age it was all about Godzilla. And so, like most fans (and nonfans, really), I was let down by the movie, and I even tried to rationalize that disappointment, there was a part of me that felt like I HAD to like it just because it was the 'new' Godzilla. And with that, I guess there was just a part of me as a 5/6 year old happy to see a giant monster run around. Still, I do remember watching Godzilla: The Series and going, "Why wasn't THIS the movie?"
As I grew to discover the Internet and the Godzilla community online I was almost liberated to see fellow fans as deeply disappointed with the movie as I was. If I was the age I am now back in 98 I'd probably know we were in for a turd just by viewing Devlin and Emmerich's filmography, on top of reading their contemptuous comments on Godzilla in general. While we don't know how the 2014 reboot will end up, I think you have to say Godzilla is in better hands with Edwards and Legendary. As small as it is, Monsters is far more impressive 'alien invasion' film than ID4.
