New Gamera Movie in the Near Future?

Spinning flame-jetted turtles, space birds being chopped up like bologna, kids in shorts screaming for help...the original Gamera series was a strange mix of wacky fun!! The 90's Gamera films set a standard that other kaiju films are measured against! Discuss Gamera films here!!

New Gamera Movie in the Near Future?

Postby kiryugoji04 » Wed Mar 12, 2014 2:00 pm

Hiroshi Sagae, model maker for numerous kaiju films and an assistant director on Final Wars, posted this on the Faceborg collective today:

It is said that KADOKAWA CORPORATION will make a new GAMERA movie.

A new image board will be published with the magazine of sale in May.
Next year is 50th anniversary of birth year of GAMERA.

I realize this is so minor that it's practically non-news but... :D

Maybe for the 50th next year? Anyway, it'll be neat to see where this goes.

I would bet more straightforward or even dark, a-la the Kaneko films, if only because Gamera the Brave bombed and it will probably be assumed that kids' kaiju movie = poor ticket sales.

...Never mind the fact that kaiju movies period in Japan right now = low ticket sales. :\ Which makes me wonder if this is anything more than an ad for an anniversary campaign, sans-movie. Unless Kadokawa is banking on the Legendary Godzilla creating a huge buzz and want for similar stuff.

I like how the typography is pretty much mimicking the new Godzilla logo, silver English font over red katakana and all.

seriously. there was a period in the early-mid 00s where things were pretty great; a lot of stuff was hitting home video for the first time ever and getting SOLID releases on DVD....

....right now makes that seem like a dung heap by comparison.

Obviously they'll get Kaneko back to make G4. 8)

Seriously though, very intriguing, I hope it turns out to be true. Exciting times to be a kaiju fan indeed.

Sagae's remark sounded closer to rumor than confirmation, that's all.

Very cool, if true. I do hope it's closer to Kaneko's approach than the Showa films...

Apparently Kadakowa owns the maker of this magazine so this is about as real as it gets. Gamera is coming back and it would seem that we'll get a new look at him in May at the latest. Can't wait.

As for tone....yeah like it or hate it I'd expect the new series to be more in line with Kaneko's films considering how much GTB bombed.

If anything, I would expect them to try to emulate the tone of the new Godzilla.
Tokyo, a smoldering memorial to the unknown, an unknown which at this very moment still prevails and could at any time lash out with its terrible destruction anywhere else in the world.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking too...which is the wrong direction for Gamera FYI.

We will have to wait and see...could be the child friendly opus that a lot of us are hoping for....or it could be grim dark. Time will tell. I'll bet pics will start surfacing in the next month or so if Newtype is doing a full picture spread in May.

Dark or light, adult or kiddie, as long as they keep Gamera as heroic.

Remember the script for the Gamera remake? Maybe Snow had a script for one that was pitched to an American company and never got approved os it's going back into Japanese hands..or a guy can dream eh?

Eh, I'm not a Gamera purist. Most of the Showa Gamera films are absolutely terrible. Even the worst Toho Godzilla film is usually better. I did like Gyaos and Barugon, but Viras, Jiger and Zigra can jump off a cliff. They're *fun* but nothing about them makes me want to watch ever again. Somehow I do enjoy Guiron.

That being said, I think Kaneko's Gamera films took the character to a much better level and the Gamera Trilogy is easily the best set of kaiju films since Biollante.

I wouldn't get too excited yet. We could end up getting something extremely stupid like Death Kappa or the new Guilala movie. You never know.

If this new film promises to use traditional tokusatsu special effects work, it'll already be infinitely more interesting to me than the new Godzilla movie.
The new Gamera will be worse than Super Monster.

Ah, okay. I had found out about this through Tumblr and followed the link here, lol.

So May, huh? So we're going to get a giant, big-budget Godzilla movie, and then an announcement about a new Gamera project, both in the same month? Good times. :)

It will certainly be interesting to see what sort of direction they go with this.

On the one hand, GTB bombed and so they will probably want to steer clear of that type of approach. On the other hand, something more in-tone with Legendary's Godzilla could be seen as a hollow, shameless ripoff. I know the creators of Gamera always intended him to be very child-friendly, but given that both approaches have been proven to work, I'm fine with any avenue they choose to take.

It's going to be interesting to see what they do. Nothing from the tokusatsu genre has impressed me in years really, but now, to suddenly have to of my most beloved characters ever (Gamera nd Kikaider) recieve reboots in the same year I'm super excited.

If they go the "Legendary Godzilla route" or even the Hesei Gamera route, I'll be a little disapointed. As I've said repeatedly, the Hesei Gamera movies are essentially perfect, but they're also a one-off in my opinion. An interesting "What-if" your slap-stick childhood hero was real approach. I don't believe that should become the new status quo. What GTB attempted to do was grat becauce it paid homage to both legitimate sides of Gamera...the Hesei and the Showa eras. I think for an anniversary film, it's the perfect time to go "back to basics" namely...something more akin to the Showa era (I'll be surprised if the villain in this film isn't a revamped Showa kaiju that isn't Gyaos...my money is on Barugon or Guiron). If they really go the "dark and gritty" route I think that's doing a diservice to what the character was originally created for. Yes, the Hesei era Gamera is every bit as legitimate as the Showa era but the roots of what Gamera is will always be firmly grounded in the Showa era. I believe you can do that era justice, while also doing your own thing a more grounded reality ala GOTU and GTB. That's the Gamera I want to see but I know a lot of younger fans want the rebirth of the Hesei era (interestingly enough it seems Hesei Gamera merch outsells Showa Gamera merch by a large margin so the fanbase for the Hesei era is stronger from all appearances).

Even if they try to do the Showa era route I think Legion is right that it's very possible we'll get something god awful like Death Kappa or the new Guilala film. This is pretty much what I expect given Japan's latest output in the genre. It just depends on how much money Kadokawa is willing to spend on a quality product. Remember in 1995, Daei originally wanted to only do a cheap, short film for Gamera's 30th anniversary. He wasn't even considered a strong enough product to release a full-fledged film at the time. Only after the execs saw what Kaneko and his crew wanted to do were they willing to green-light a feature lenght film. I think GTB's box office will make Kadokawa a little nervous so I can see this film going one of either two ways:

1) Something cheap. If they go this route I firmly believe they'll do something more Showa-esque.

2) If they're pouring a lot of money into this, I would think that means that maybe Godzilla 2014 is tracking well and that they want to cash in on that same sort of market (the Hesei trilogy fans too).

Finally, one last word of caution. Kadokawa is the same studio that brought us Daimajin Kannon which, while a decent show, was pretty much Daimajin in name only. It remains to be seen how much this new Gamera will resemble anything we currently know.
