New Gamera Movie in the Near Future?

Spinning flame-jetted turtles, space birds being chopped up like bologna, kids in shorts screaming for help...the original Gamera series was a strange mix of wacky fun!! The 90's Gamera films set a standard that other kaiju films are measured against! Discuss Gamera films here!!

I suppose Gamera being licensed out to another studio or perhaps a co-production with Kadokawa and someone else would be our best bet for seeing Gamera again.

Funny: most of us Western fans have no conception of things that must be common knowledge to the average Japanese filmgoer, such as the scale of the productions studios usually make.

I was just spitballing. Maybe Tsuburaya? Taguchi's doing such a great job with the classic Tokusatsu effects it'd be great to see him do them on a larger scale.

--- edit ---

... then of course there's always a US studio getting the rights alá Godzilla. I'm just saying; Guillermo del Toro is a huge Gamera fan!

Matt Frank's a good artist, but not necessarily a font of information. It's a likely scenario, though.

^ Well, I know he's got fans in Japan, seen pics of him visiting Japan (including the set of Ultraman Orb!) so at the very least he's closer to the source than us.

It's also the kind of thing you'd never see in a press release: we're sorry, but we don't make big budget movie!

... it's a shame they couldn't have just finished the 'pilot film' as a 7 minute short or something and shown it in front of major releases. It could've drummed up interest in the character.

*sigh*

You know, with Toho under orders to steer any of their Godzilla films out of 2019 and 2020 it would be the perfect chance for another Japanese studio to revive another Japance monster in, say, autumn or winter 2019.

You know what I would really like?

An HD version of this short film that they made so I can watch it on my projector? I thought we were going to get it with the "4k restored" box set that came out a while ago. You just get a little clip of it. (Unless I am missing something?)

Q Godzilla in Hollywood is popular, but will KADOKAWA not reboot the gamera series? Inoue: "Godzilla King of Monsters" was a wonderful one. Gamera is an important IP. I want to get excited, but I can not say concrete things here. I want you to improve the momentum #

I'm not getting my hopes up. I assume it is click bait. If something was to happen, I hope it is Japanese made with US $$$.

Better translations basically say, "It's cool Godzilla is out right now. I wish Gamera were more popular. Oh well. Maybe some day...?"

So like...nothing is happening with Gamera. Maybe ever again.

Sure.

But with KOTM floundering at the box office, I'm not gonna hold my breath that the FAR less popular series gets rebooted.

^ I'd prefer a new Japanese film.

I mean, we're likely nearing the end of this cycle of Hollywood produced kaiju movies. I've really enjoyed experiencing it, but after 7 years of it I'm reminded of why I became a fan of these movies in the first place. It's not the only reason, but the fact that these weren't American films, that they were made for an audience that was culturally very different from me, was part of the appeal. It made them different from the usual American effects blockbuster. I find the idea of a new Japanese kaiju movie much more exciting.

Crazy to think that if there isn't a new Gamera film by this time in 2021, a definite possibility, then we'll be in the longest Gamera drought since the series started. It was almost exactly 15 years from Super Monster to Guardian. Somehow it doesn't feel like The Brave was all that long ago.

Maybe we can convince Kodakawa to let Netflix play the GoTU trilogy for small a small royalty fee to see if it can drum up some curiosity and have Netflix finance a new Gamera series?

lets brainstorm some ideas that won't ever come to fruition.

This idea actually makes some sense. And not just a new series of Gamera movies. Godzilla movies as well. I personally think they would both have a healthy run on Netflix. I’d have to think that after the success of Shin Godzilla and Toho prepping for the next reboot of G films, the topic of future Gamera movies has had to have came up once or twice,
