New Gamera Movie in the Near Future?

Concept or not, the effects look fine. It's not 100% perfect, but it's leagues beyond any previous Japan made monster movie. Hell, even Attack on Titan's CGI doesn't look this good, and it combined live action. This and the Ultraman trailer from a few months ago set the standard for CGI in monster movies. Man, Godzilla 2016 has got its work cut out for it.

CGI looked ok to good until that second act appeared in the trailer. Gamera and Irys(or whatever that was) looked terrible, Irys looked HORRIBLE. The Gamera/Gyaos scenes looked good though. G16 should easily look better than this.

To clarify though, and I think there's a lot of people confused on this, this trailer was just a special trailer for the 50th anniversary of Gamera. Maybe they'll use these elements from this trailer for the film in 2016 or 2017, but it wasn't for a specific film.

For me, having Gyaos is never the problem. Heck, I welcome Gyaos in any Gamera movie. It is how he is executed that is more concerning. I will admit, I am not crazy about seeing an all CGI Gyaos (or Gamera, for that matter). But seeing as this was only some sort of teaser, I can live with that.

While there has been talk of a Gamera movie these past many months, I must confess, this news took me totally by surprise.

It's like Kadokawa ran out of time doing the "10 years later" part or something... because the difference was day and night honestly. The Gamera/Gyaos scenes had weight, as you put it, especially Gamera... though it was still far from perfect. The coloring was a tad off as well. The Gamera/Irys stuff was like looking at a PS3 cut scene or something. The "weight" was completely gone.

Thankfully, none of this is for a actual film, and they have time to clean up their CGI. And yes, I still fully expect Shin-Gojira to look much better. If Toho can't do better than this, well they just need to quick doing Godzilla films and let LP/WB handle it.

*shrugs* I dug it. I don't have a problem with kaiju movies using CGI effects. I thought the contrast in tone between the slightly humorous dialogue and all the dark violence and destruction was a little weird, but as others have pointed out, it's just a concept trailer. But beyond that, I thought it was great! Can't wait to see the finished product.

The dad's dialogue seems goofy, but actually it's an understandable attempt to calm the kid and keep him moving at the same time.

That tentacles monster looks like a modern redesign of Viras to me, it looks 'alien' enough. ~ Since this just a short, there is still a long wait until the actual product comes out.

Was that tentacled monster supposed to be Viras?

Coming here and to other sites really has me questioning my powers of observation, though...I thought the CG was technically excellent, and used to very powerful effect. And since when has Gamera NOT been gritty and visceral? They were chopping up monsters and spewing blood from the beginning. And saving kids, accidentally or not.

Very excited for this, and for that CG Ultraman that everybody seems to hate.

Watching the trailer again, I think my quibble with the CG is some of the movement. The textures and modeling look fine; it's the animations that sometimes look choppy or unrefined. The new monster's movements made me think of Reptilian. I can't get behind it, stylistic choice or not. But I can at least say the visuals show promise. If the crew keeps working on its techniques, it'll have something solid. CGI can never be the same as models and suits, but for my tastes, it still can be palatable. And the people working on this seem to be trying pretty hard, if the trailer's best moments are any hint. I'm kind of rooting for them.

I hate that sentiment.

Look, we'll always love practical effects, but it just doesn't fly anymore. For the genre to move forward you have to adjust. I love what Toho is doing, combining practical with CGI... what Kadokawa is doing is risky because while most of the scenes looked good, there was some very choppy looking moments(the new monster for example). The "10 years later" part didn't look very good at all.

The Gyaos looked like they had googly eyes and that goofy-ness kind of took me out of the feel from the rest of the trailer. Effects wise, while I do wish it had practical effects, I do think the first part was better looking. But I never felt Gamera was suited for the dark and gritty. To me, G3 is almost too much at times but GotU and G2.

But all in all, I'm fine with it. More kaiju the better.
