New Gamera Movie in the Near Future?

I love the conceit of the trailer – following a kid who's been observing Gamera for years – but I HATE the all-CG approach to the effects. I have never felt more conflicted in my life.

This and the Ultraman N/A trailer legit give me existential depression.

I'm good with things evolving, but when I see stuff like this I cringe at how bad some of the effects are. I think the best method would be CGI for the kaiju while miniatures are practical, and maybe just occasionally enhanced with CGI.

The animation on the CGI buildings at the end of that trailer, for example, is LAUGHABLY bad.

I can get past some dodgy CGI on a kaiju, because I have no frame of reference in reality for how a kaiju moves. But when I see a kaiju smash a building, and the whole top half flies off like the thing was made of Legos, when it should crumble where struck, or the way those buildings at the beginning of the "10 Years Later" part move, my brain goes into "This is bull**** mode" and the whole thing (even the stuff I might otherwise forgive) becomes victim to my harsh inner critic.

I watch a movie like Fury Road and think "That's CGI done RIGHT." and I know NO Japanese kaiju movie is ever gonna have a $200+ million dollar budget, but the APPROACH to CGI taken by Fury Road was absolutely brilliant, and is what ALL movies should do (looking at you, Jurassic World; much as I enjoyed you, you had a buttload of shaky CGI, used at times when something practical would have worked WAY better).

I enjoyed it. I don't care about some of the more iffy bits of CG because the images were interesting enough. It's the same reason I don't mind iffy Ultra kaiju suits or tv effects because the action is dynamic and appeals to me. The bigger issue is the story, but this looks like a perfect route to go. Very excited for whatever comes of this.

No I see them as looking cutesy too, so I don't like the look because of that. Gyaos should be creepy in my opinion.

Not to say that I'm 100% completely disinterested in the new Gamera film but now that a few days have passed, I think I can safely say that Sion Sono's LOVE & PEACE is still the only giant turtle movie that actually matters to me right now.

I read a short version of the teaser will be included on the new Gamera 1995-2006 Blu-Ray box in Japan.

... and remember: if the preview was anything to go by, this'll be more like an animated film with live action elements, so filming and production can occur behind closed doors basically unnoticed.

^That's a good sign, but at the same time folks on the internet are now repeating that the supposed film has come to nothing, with some chalking it up to miscommunication and that it was never a given that the short film would ever lead to a feature anyway? I'm not sure where all this is coming from and how much is rumor or whatever.

... but even so, even if this iteration of the project has fallen apart (which may not be the case, just if) I think the unprecedented success of Shin Godzilla is bound to stir Gamera out of hiding. I think it's inevitable: Gamera is Godzilla's only corporate rival, and when Godzilla stirs up interest for all things kaiju I don't think Gamera is that far behind.

Do we even have a definitive "this movie is cancelled" or was the non-denial denial of "the pilot film was just a celebration of the anniversary and we never said we were making a movie" all we got?

Oh, and it occurs to me that Gamera is in the same boat as Godzilla in the late '70s through early '80s with lots of almost movies.

Matt Frank chimes in on why we're not seeing a Gamera or Daimajin movie from Kadokawa: he says they simply don't have the money to make such a large-scale film.

Sounds about right. The highest grossing Kadokawa film last year was Sadako vs Kayako, and it made $8m. Ten years ago, Gamera the Brave bombed, making $4m out of a $10m+ budget. Good luck funding an expensive, CGI Gamera film.
