Gamera Fan Film: "Guardian"?

Spinning flame-jetted turtles, space birds being chopped up like bologna, kids in shorts screaming for help...the original Gamera series was a strange mix of wacky fun!! The 90's Gamera films set a standard that other kaiju films are measured against! Discuss Gamera films here!!

Apparently this is happening. A person who shall not be named, has shown still that an independent company is working on this, however this new Gamera film from Japan murkies the waters.

The script he sent me was 124 pages long. I'll attempt to summarize:

It takes place in an alternate history where giant monsters are a regular occurrence like an earthquake or tornado. Giant electric fences are part of the every day landscape, and the existence of the monsters have left a mark on society- it's like Pacific Rim but a lot more humdrum. It's very real and matter of fact. No end of the world stuff going on. The main character is grieving his Father's death (killed in a monster attack in the first few pages) and is relocated to a new home to live with his aunt and cousin.

He ends up finding the Gamera Runestone in a redwood forest. Gamera comes out of the ground instead of the water in this one (?) and shares a psychic bond with him similar to Elliot in E.T, or maybe the Iron Giant. It becomes his best friend, and he's sort of oblivious to the fact that it's a killing machine.

Gamera is essentially a super weapon- like a giant Terminator. Once linked to the monster, the main character can tap into it's mind, which is like a strategic super computer. He becomes sort of a genius- he's able to do math at superhuman levels (he was previously failing), and there's a great sequence where he takes out a group of bullies with strategic strikes. Slowly though, his connection to the monster begins to take a heavy toll on him, sort of like Frodo in Lord of The Rings.

There's also the matter of another creature called "The World Eater", which Gamera does battle with. The ending was sublime. He white fangs Gamera at one point earlier in the story and in a fantastic sequence gets him to come to the rescue by throwing himself off a building to demonstrate his trust in the monster. Gamera's fist erupts from the concrete and catches him--- it's so very cool.

I wish that I could post up some pages, because it's really, really well written. It pulls all of this stuff off flawlessly without ever being too kiddy or trite.

Disturbingly, the monsters only bond with young children (15 years or younger) who have Atlantean ancestors. The director explained to me that this was inspired by the anime, "Evangelion". There's a terrific scene in the story where a team of Snipers is despatched to take out a kid who is linked to a sort of bat creature--- and the weightiness of what they've been ordered to do, the way it's handled... it's so unique and ballsy for this genre.

sounds rather good

^Maybe it's just because the synopsis sounds like it was written by a 14 year old boy?

It's actually because we all know that Gamera's a history buff and thus his mind-melding helping a kid do math is just preposterous.

I have to admit, I kinda like some of the ideas there, it sounds just as wacky as I'd hope Gamera to be. lhb412 said it reads like it was written by a 14-year-old, which I can kinda agree with, and I feel is oddly fitting since the Showa movies could've easily come from the imagination of a child.

All I want to know now is, if this is actually happening (would like the source on that), does this mean we're getting two Gamera movies, or is this the one Hiroshi Sagae talked about? :?

I'm sure some talented folks could take this and make a real cool Gamera film, but that description reads a bit like it would end up as a film like Dragonball: Evolution; trying to adapt this big, Japanese fantasy franchise but sandwich it into the American teen-movie mold - and you'd need a big budget, which the Dragonball movie did not get (the phrase 'independent company' brings that one to mind).

But, like I said, It could work if the stars lined up.

This is probably the only way to do a Gamera film in America...make it gritty, angsty and dark.

That being said it doesn't sound that bad BUT I do have a huge problem with Gamera seemingly only protecting, or bonding, with children of Atlantean heritage. Gamera is supposed to be the friend of ALL children. This proposed version of Gamera comes across like some sort of angry, (genius?) racist.

I'll continue to state that I think the perfect Gamera tone should be something like Speed Racer or Kung Fu Panda. Light, easily accessible, funny and most of all fun for all ages.

Godzilla has the market in dark kaiju films as far as I'm concerned...let Gamera go a different route.

You know what, I completely failed to make the connection that independent company more than likely = a lower budget. Which, for an American production that would likely want to rely a lot on CGI and such, things could look really bad.

Looking it up, Dragonball had a budget of $45,000,000. Give a budget like that to Kaneko and his team from the Gamera trilogy and I'd trust them to turn in something awesome, visually and otherwise, but yeah, I don't see an American production going with traditional Japanese effects methods and especially not in a serious way.

Whoa, that's a bit much. I imagine the relationship would more or less operate similarly to the previous four movies - Gamera links up to a young person in order to draw strength during battle. Here they just elaborate on that premise a little and I kind of dig it.

So these just mysteriously appeared on Tumblr:

All that accompanied them was:

Images from a new independent American Gamera film

No idea on the direct source of them, but the original poster has since claimed they are indeed from "THE GUARDIAN" and were leaked under very "hush hush" circumstances. Make of this what you will!

Theories:

-This is a fan-film

-This is a really low budget thing and will be the Gamera equivalent to that U.S. Ultraman show from the early '90s.

-Asylum acquired the rights to Gamera and are producing a cheapie Gamera film direct-to-video to cash-in on Godzilla ... which would kinda be the greatest thing ever. It would be so appropriate to the legend of Gamera being the cheap, knock-off Godzilla that it would be sublime. If I could pick up a DVD of the direct-to-video U.S. Gamera film on Monday and see Godzilla in theaters Friday I think I can die happy.

Oh right... And were they in connection to this project?

By the way, do we properly know what the initial source of all these rumours is? The initial poster never seemed to specify a source (apologies if they did, I must have missed it).
