I know the perfect director for an American GAMERA movie!

Spinning flame-jetted turtles, space birds being chopped up like bologna, kids in shorts screaming for help...the original Gamera series was a strange mix of wacky fun!! The 90's Gamera films set a standard that other kaiju films are measured against! Discuss Gamera films here!!

Neill Blomkamp.

He blew me away with both DISTRICT 9 and ELYSIUM.

Too bad it will never happen. But he'd be perfect.

He is willing to take on original, high concept SciFi with a mature eye. I'd put him in a similar boat with Joe Cornish, Matt Reeves, Duncan Jones and Rupert Wyatt as fresh directors that are worth keeping an eye on. I would much rather see any of those 5 directors than someone like JJ Abrams, Brian Singer, Stephen Sommers or John Chu.

He just seems to have a thing for fairly grueling science fiction. I'm all for directors branching out, I just don't see how he's a magical perfect shoe-in for a series as fantastical as Gamera.

Joe Cornish, though, sure. I'd be down for that.

True, so far Blomkamp has had a more gritty leaning than we'd ideally see in a Gamera flick, but despite that leaning, he still manages an action packed and overall positive movie experience (which would keep me from throwing a great director like Alfanso Cuaron on the list). I would probably have thrown Edwards name in the mix if he weren't already on board with Godzilla. Another director i could get excited to see take on the big turtle would be Matthew Vaughn... although if i had to put money on it... an American Gamera movie would be directed by Tim Burton ::shudder::

Brad Bird.

Iron Giant, Incredibles, he's proven himself in live-action filmmaking... He could bring back the 'friend of children' and sell it to even the most jaded.

I love me some Neil Blomkamp...but I haven't seen anything from him yet that seems well suited to Gamera in particular, or kaiju in general.

I'd like this. I mean, switch out Gamera for the Iron Giant and you'd have a decent kaiju film. I need to watch the Iron Giant again, such a great film.

I just bought Iron Giant a few days ago. Wonderful film.

And yes, Brad Bird would be an excellent choice. He's probably the only person mentioned in this thread that I'd be ok with.

I'm not sure that we need, or that I want, an American Gamera film though. Moreso than Godzilla, Gamera seems quintessentially Japanese in concept.

I can't kid myself though, no matter who ends up making a new Gamera film or tv show, I'll be there. I just hope that the next series, or film, goes back to more of a Showa era vibe. You can't out "Kaneko" Kaneko when it comes to Gamera. Trying to make Gamera even more serious or realistic would be a pretty big mistake in my opinion.

I feel like the only way to make Gamera digestible for an American audience would be to do an animated film and something in the vein of Gamera the Brave or yeah, the Iron Giant.

As for directors... some good ones have been named... Brad Bird, Alfonso Couron, and Joe Cornish would all be good picks. I can't really think of anybody else at the moment.

Blomkamp would be an inspired choice, and yeah, he's good, but I'm unsure if he'd really be the proper fit for Gamera. I think his allegory-based sci fi trademarks would be more at home in a Godzilla movie to be honest.

I think an American film would intentionally avoid the mysticism of the Kaneko films, which would help in translating Gamera to a general American audience

The only way to make Gamera more serious would be to remove the mystical stuff, which IMO, would be making him TOO serious.

Leave that for Godzilla, br0s.

I think a mystical gamera could be done. Maybe as a shinto deity? Or Hell, maybe even as a period piece similar to Daimajin?

Exactly, Gamera has been done about as seriously as can be and still fit the character.

I've said it before, but if there was one modern-day director that I'd like to see tackle Gamera it'd be Miyazaki.

On that topic though, I suspect that if/when Gamera is brought back it could very well be in animation form. I'm more than ok with this to be honest. Don't know why I'm ok with it, but not Godzilla in animation form, but a Pixar Gamera or something like that could be very, very cool.

Totally agree.

I wouldn't want to see Gamera without his squarely heroic, defender of Earth persona. No matter how serious Kaneko's films got, they always kept the core 'Gamera-ness' intact, which is fundamentally different from Godzilla.

I like the Brad Bird idea for a more intimate, character-driven plot. But for huge scale action I like Blomkamp.

This of course is without the overwrought mysticism from the Heisei series.

Yeah, I don't really see how "mystical" and "serious" contradict each other in any way.

I think the perfect place that Gamera belongs is in animated form, so I wouldn't mind at all a Pixar-type animated movie by Brad Bird. A blend of Iron Giant's wonder and charm with the humor and fun of Incredibles would be incredible for Gamera! :D

i enjoy animated films and thought Iron Giant was pretty great, but i really have very little desire to see an animated Gamera flick. In fact i almost responded to the first Pixar comment with an eye-roll emoticon, but it appears I am in the minority on this one. I'm sure it would be fine, but its just not a concept that gets me excited
