Comparing Nolan's TDK trilogy with Kaneko's Gamera trilogy

Spinning flame-jetted turtles, space birds being chopped up like bologna, kids in shorts screaming for help...the original Gamera series was a strange mix of wacky fun!! The 90's Gamera films set a standard that other kaiju films are measured against! Discuss Gamera films here!!

i came into this thread with a somewhat dismissive attitude, because i kinda feel like the general statements made could be the basic framework for a LOT of hero-based trilogies...

...but there definitely are some fun/interesting parallels being drawn here.

This is kind of cool. It really makes you look at these in a different light, if only a little.

Oh, I absolutely agree with this. This topic serves dual purposes, to my mind; one is to note the interesting purely coincidental ones, the other is to note structural narrative qualities that seem to naturally lend themselves to hero-based trilogies.

That, too. But I'll always find the pretentious way of putting things. :)

An interesting discussion to be sure. I'm usually not that introspective on my movie watching, but this thread made an interesting read. Thanks for the OP KG, and congratulations on the upcoming nuptials. :Big-th-up:

Another interesting comparison:

In Nolan's universe superheroes, even the idea of capes and cinematic heroes like Zorro, have never existed. Batman isn't a superhero, he's just Batman, the first of his kind.

In Kaneko's universe there are no turtles. Gamera isn't a giant turtle, he's something new.

Well, that's all for now. Thought it was kind of cool

In the first film, don't they refer to him as a giant turtle when he first shows up? Or am is my mind just making things up due to being overworked and under-slept?

They just refer to him as a giant monster.

Kaneko is on record with saying that turtles don't exist in his Gamera universe. I personally think it's kind of dumb, as is the reason that Bruce doesn't see Zorro the night his parents die (as is typical for his origin in the comics) because Nolan says that masked heroes have never existed in that universe.

Still, it's another valid comparison I think.

Masked heroes I can at least see... those don't even exist in the real world either. And besides, they probably thought seeing Zorro would make it look like Bruce got as much inspiration from the Zorro character as his parents murder, thus taking some of the impact away from the murder.

But... turtles don't exist in Kaneko's Gamera-verse? F*cking TURTLES?! One of the oldest animals on the face of the earth? Doesn't exist in the Gamera trilogy cuz... why again? Because Kaneko can't seem to deal with the fact that a giant turtle is a ridiculous idea? So he just says "Oh, there are no turtles here." Bullsh*t. Total bullsh*t. What difference does it even make? Just don't show a turtle or say the word "turtle."- Don't go marching around saying it takes place in some turtle-less dystopia.

I always thought the guy was pretentious, but that's not only the dumbest thing I've heard him say, it also might be one of the dumbest things I've seen any director say. You made a movie about a giant turtle. Deal with it. As much as I love the trilogy (FOR REALZ), the guy really seems to have a lot of contempt for the Gamera character... he can't even own up to the fact that he's a turtle!

Oh well, at least its hilarious, even if he doesn't mean it to be.

Its just annoying he felt like he had to rationalize a giant turtle by making such an idiotic statement.

PS- A world without turtles would suck. Turtles rule.

I guess it's a silly statement, but it matters so little in the grand scheme of things.

This is true.

At least they don't say in the movie that turtles don't exist.

Wait... if turtles don't exist, how would they KNOW turtles don't exist?

I personally really like the idea that turtles don't exist, thus making the traditional tortoise guardian just as mythical as the phoenix or the dragon. I dunno, I don't see what the big deal is.

Yeah, it's pretty dumb and pretencious.

And Jared, I get what you're saying man but there's no reason it can't be like that while still having turtles. We have birds, but we also have the myth of the phoenix. One doesn't negate the other.

Oh, and turtles rule fo sho.

Because it's someone being ashamed of the character they're working on. Who cares if he's a turtle, that's what he is. Denying just seems odd.

I think the shame part is a little too much being read into it, but even so, the product we got was great, who cares if he was ashamed of Gamera?
