Gamera Monster Appreciation Thread

Spinning flame-jetted turtles, space birds being chopped up like bologna, kids in shorts screaming for help...the original Gamera series was a strange mix of wacky fun!! The 90's Gamera films set a standard that other kaiju films are measured against! Discuss Gamera films here!!

Gamera Monster Appreciation Thread

Following Kiryu's excellent idea for a Ultra kaiju thread I decided I'd create a Gamera kaiju thread as well.

Godzilla and Ultraman kaiju are both great, but my favorite kaiju by far come from the Gamera films. I'm a fan of all of them (except Zedus who I'm just meh about) and in particular the Showa era Gamera kaiju.

I'll take a Gyaos, Barugon and Guiron over a Rodan, Anguirus and Gigan any day :D

Gamera kaiju suck. Not worthy of their own thread.

:P

No, seriously, Showa Gyaos and Irys are two of the coolest kaiju ever created ever.

Legion might be the best kaiju ever created. I like it for the same reason that I like ridley scott's original idea for the xenomorphs: Legion has a complete, rational life-cycle.

The design is also quite unique

Legion is one of the best cinematic kaiju anyhow, so he's easily my favorite Gamera kaiju.

Followed by Gyaos and Irys and Guiron and Barugon.
In that order.

But I can care less about Jiger, Viras, and Zigra. Ugh.

I used to have the same exact favorite list...(except I've never really liked Legion all that much. I admit he's great, and an awesome concept, but I have no personal attachement to it.)

But Jiger, Viras and Zigra have all grown on me over the years (well, I was fasinated with Zigra as a kid...Shark Week was my favorite week of the year lol)

Gamera's Showa foes were awesome because each one poses a different sort of threat to Gamera.

Plus, I mean...a monster that shoots explosive rainbows!!! And another that fires ninja stars!!!! Huuzah!!!

Gamera monsters are cool. They might not be the strongest, but they are definitely imaginative; I mean, a four-legged whatever-it-is with a knife for a head? You can't get much more bizarre than that. I've always been partial to the simple, no-flash, dinosaur-like monsters of the early Godzilla movies, and the Gamera series has several. Out of all of them, I'd have to pick Barugon. He just looks cool to me. He's kind of plain, but I just "dig" him. The rainbow beam was corny, but it wasn't used every five seconds either.

Lol, the rainbow is the thing I like most about Barugon. He's kind of boring and he semi steals the name of Toho's beast. He's probably my least favorite of the bunch.

And Mouth, Guiron is probably my 3rd favorite...right after Gamera and Gyaos.

I'd say the quadrepeds of the group are my least favorite. My list would look something along the lines of:

Gamera
Gyaos
Guiron
Zigra/ Viras
Jiger
Barugon

As much as I love Guiron, I didn't really care for the story surrounding him.
