Spinning flame-jetted turtles, space birds being chopped up like bologna, kids in shorts screaming for help...the original Gamera series was a strange mix of wacky fun!! The 90's Gamera films set a standard that other kaiju films are measured against! Discuss Gamera films here!!

Also I just noticed on Amazon the Pop Flicks DVD set is out

This is a nice inexpensive way to have the AIP versions of the showa films they dubbed. A Great piece of nostalgia for the way the Gamera films were originally shown to U.S. Audiances

I will never understand what some of you see in Guiron or Viras. Those films are dreadfully boring. :|

I'm really coming around to agree with this list. Only change I'd make is to put Guiron in the top category lol

I really can't fathom why you don't like Guiron, Jared. I mean...you've given reason but it just seems like such a film you'd love.

...a lot of the old Gamera films do, but Guiron especially.

i'm genuinely surprised Jared is as 'meh' towards the Showa Gamera films as he is...

GOOD GOD, THEY ARE SO BORING. WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO TO MAKE YOU PEOPLE UNDERSTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNND?!

*twitch*

Generally speaking, I like my tokusatsu films to have, you know, energy. Most of the Showa Gamera films are such f*cking slogs to watch.

unlike...say Godzilla X Megaguirus. I think that's what confuses me. That terrible offspring of truly bad execution and snooze fest is far more unbearable than any of the Showa Gamera films save Super Monster.

Not really. I do think its a very decent Gamera film. I don't quite enjoy it as much as Kaneko's trilogy, but its a nice balance between the trilogy and the original Gamera films.

I do too. Perfect tone for a new Gamera film. That being said I'm starting to agree with Mouth that we might not EVER see another Gamera film. Even the Hesei series really wasn't succesful financially. The Japanese audience doesn't seem to care about giant monsters and Gamera in particular.

I wish somebody would do an animated Gamera film. I mean, if we can't have a traditional toku film, I think that's the next best thing. Gamera, of all kaiju, lends himself well to animated stuff.

I'd take Gamera the Brave over a LOT of Gamera films...I'll need to re-visit the Gamera series, but I gotta be honest...my memory of GTB is unabashedly positive, while my memory of G3 is decidedly more mixed...

It's not that I don't like it, but I felt my hyperbole of "RECTIFY THIS." is more applicable to G2 than GTB.

So I tried to watch Gamera vs. Viras this morning and I was extremely bored. I don't know what I was smoking before but I need it again to enjoy that movie.

Using Jared's watchability scale, here's my updated rankings...

Love
Gamera Guardian of the Universe
Gamera 2 Advent of Legion
Gamera vs. Guiron
Gamera 3 Awakening of Iris
Gamera the Brave

Generally Very, Very Good
Gamera Vs. Gyaos
Gamera Vs. Barugon
...
Gamera Vs. Jiger

A Mad Trainwreck of Hilarity
Gamera the Giant Monster

Varying Stages of Unwatchability
Gamera Vs. Zigra
Gamera Vs. Viras

That Which Teaches You The Very Depths of Despair
Gamera the Super Monster

I'm FINALLY buying some of the Shout Factory DVDs and planning to do a re-watch of the series before G-Fest.

I probably need to revisit all of them in the near future, but as it stands:

Gamera the Brave
Gamera 2: Advent of Legion
Gamera: Guardian of the Universe
Gamera 3: Awakening of Irys
(The trilogy is pretty interchangeable for me, but GtB is solidly on top.)
.....
Gamera vs. Gyaos

...........

Gamera vs. Barugon
Giant Monster Gamera
Gamera vs. Viras
Gamera vs. Guiron
Gamera vs. Jiger
Gamera vs. Zigra

Sorry, guys; the Showa films rub me the wrong way, and after Gyaos I think they get progressively worse.
I haven't actually seen Super Monster yet, but I don't feel strongly inclined to.

Best to worst

Gamera 2: Advent of Legion
Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris
Gamera: Guardian of the Universe
Gamera vs. Gyaos
Gamera the Brave
Gamera vs. Guiron
Gamera vs. Barugon
Gamera vs. Jiger
Gamera the Giant Monster
Gamera vs. Viras
Gamera vs. Zigra
Gamera the Super Monster

Iris/Guardian and Gyaos/Brave were the hardest to place, as they're basically equal and only edge out one another by slight margins.
