Ranking the Gamera films

Spinning flame-jetted turtles, space birds being chopped up like bologna, kids in shorts screaming for help...the original Gamera series was a strange mix of wacky fun!! The 90's Gamera films set a standard that other kaiju films are measured against! Discuss Gamera films here!!

I edited my list, slightly influenced by the great lists of Mouth and Mekagojira

Really though, I love almost all of these films with the exception of Super Monster lol...it's the only Gamera film that I don't like

I'm in the same boat, with Super Monster and Zigra being the two I really don't like, and I find the original to be an inconsistent bore for the most part. Other than those, after my top 4 or so, I kinda like the rest equally.

Yeah the first film is insanely boring...

And I'm at a loss for words on Zigra...I know it's not a perfect film, it's heavily flawed and very slow at times...but I love it ( I do realize that I'm in the minority here on that film...kinda like another underwater monster film, "Leviathan" !!! lol)

And I'm editing my list a third time I think...gonna move G3 down a few pegs....I do love me some Showa Gamera

Of the ones I've seen so far...

    Love
    • Gamera 3 Awakening of Iris
    • Gamera the Brave
    • Gamera 2 Advent of Legion
    • Gamera Guardian of the Universe
    • Gamera Vs. Barugon
    • Gamera Vs. Gyaos

    Watchable
    • Gamera the Giant Monster

    Bleh.
    • Gamera Vs. Viras

I'll update once I finish the Showa series, though I'm not expecting much after Viras. :/

And I don't care how cliché it is - every time I watch Gamera 3, I expect to finally agree on how overrated and inferior it is compared to so many other kaiju films and every time it reminds me why I love it OH SO MUCH.

That's fine. I don't have a problem with people who think it's amazing...I just don't see it and never have.

I still remember the TREMENDOUS disappointment level after seeing it for the first time, expecting it to top G2, and for me it didn't even come close.
Gills.

Once I get the replacement BD for 3 I'm gonna marathon the trilogy and I'll post my more detailed thoughts then. I will say I don't think it's the absolute pinnacle of kaiju filmmaking but I DO think that, to this date, it's the pinnacle of the style it's going for.

To paraphrase the great Egoraptor: This movie makes my dick ROCK HARD.

While I definitely prefer G2, I do feel G3 comes close to it. It just can't surpass the excellence that is G2. :D

It's my second favorite.

Yep, G3 is my "least favorite" of the Heisei trilogy. You read that right.

I thought I would like it more than I did but I lost interest after Barugon showed up. There's a lot of good in there but it's wasted on a plodding movie.

Viras is lame. Guiron and Jiger are so much better.

While I like G2 I think it's the weakest of the three. The pacing gets slower as the movie goes on and there's no build up to the climax unlike the first and third films. The characters didn't do much for me either.

Personally I feel like all three Heisei Gamera movies are on basically equal footing - I would be hard-pressed to sit down and choose which of them I believed was the absolute BEST. G3 just rubs me in all the right ways though, hence why it stands out as my favorite. G1 and G2 are SO CLOSE behind, not to mention Gamera the Brave, which has quickly become my second-favorite Gamera movie.

I'm sorry... Yuasa-who?

I would rather watch maggots infesting an elephant's trunk than Gamera: The Brave again.

While I do think there is some gap in quality for the trilogy, I do totally agree that Brave is right up there with them. I don't hate the Showa films, but from 95 onward they just did it better.

I love the trilogy and Brave as well..

And I've never thought about it, but Gman makes a good point..the human characters are almost non-existant ala the Hesei Godzilla in G2. Unlike the Godzilla films...G2 can coast by just fine because it does everything else so well.

I dunno, I actually really liked the human cast of characters G2. They're FAR better than those of your typical Heisei Godzilla film, IMO.

The scene where several of them meet at the girl's house is one of the best human moments of the entire trilogy.
