Watched this again last night (first time with the wife-to-be) and I really have to say this is a slow movie (as is the third one) with almost zero character development. It's a good "kaiju" movie but I really can't say I'd show this to someone not already inclined to like the genre anyways.
Pacing wise the best of the bunch is GOTU. Good mix of Gamera stuff and also the best human characters of the trilogy.
G2 has a lot of great things about it. It blew my mind the first time I saw it. The effects were amazing for their time. Legion itself is a tremendous, well thought out kaiju. Gamera has never looked better and has yet to look this perfect again. The military combining forces with a kaiju is a nice touch.
That being said...I think it's deff a throw back to Honda's films, which, while great, feel a lil slow when combined with today's editing. The Hesei Gamera trilogy is really the kaiju equivalent of Nolan's Batman films..."realistic" re-interpretations of classic characters that are slightly humorless and lacking depth around central characters but these two trilogies also helped redefine their respective characters. In both cases, I wouldn't want to see future movies follow in their footsteps but as one offs they're great.
I believe the best interpretation of Gamera has yet to be made. GTB really has come the closest to combining the light and dark aspects of what could someday be the definitive take on the character.
