Man, I love Gamera 2 though, need to watch that again soon. I think it's the most "Honda-esque" film since, well, Honda.

Best thing about this film as with Final Wars, it can be used to pad the title monster's stats when it comes to online discussion battles. Final Wars as ridiculous as it was had Godzilla's upper limit of him beating 10 kaiju in one day (if you can include forcing X to transform), knocking out 3, killing the rest, before needing a boost from the Gotengo to beat his strongest foe yet, able to pinpoint a meteor headed straight to earth and survive the annihilation it causes and still fight etc...

SMG shows Showa Gamera taking on 6 kaiju and 2 space ships in one day before taking himself out to destroy the last, and thats his upper limit and fully cements his masochistic tendencies, Kaneko picked up on for the heisei trilogy. Apparently the lead super alien hero was a tough wrestler at the time too, kinda like Don Frye who was picked up for Final Wars was.
Still by far one of the worst films ever made, probably because they just wanted to capitalize off of Gamera after Daiei managed to survive the 70s barely, and it was just intented to appeal to children. The films themselves had fallen steeply since Gyaos, and probably the high point was the first 2, But this took it off the deep end. The turtle scene reminded me of the Brave in a way, but I appreciate that film and the battle in Nagoya 10x more after this. That Godzilla poster falling over towards the end where controlled Gamera is rampaging might be the closest we get to a crossover for a while if ever.

In this movie's defense, I'll just say that its the first Gamera movie I ever saw. So I had no idea about the copy and paste job that they did. It was awesome as a kid.

When I got older, I realized what a train wreck it really was. Absolutely cheap and stale.

But hey, its a great film as an introduction to showa Gamera for those not familar with him.

Never seen this before. I can't wait 'till I finish the film before commenting. 23 minutes in:

- The lead space woman/professional wrestler lady is cool.
- This kid's exuberant "Gamera March" is the weirdest thing in the whole damn franchise. He's so enthusiastic, and it sounds like music an ice cream truck makes.
- Random Kinnikuman shoutout!

- Calling it: none of this is really happening. This kid's mind has snapped. It explains why the plot doesn't make sense. Why only the space women seem to notice that there's monsters running around (clearly they're based on real adults this kid knows).

- None of the human cast does anything pertinent to the plot until a wrestling match at a kid's playground... I'm speechless.
- Man, the photography of all the new shots of that crummy Gamera model and any new composite footage is horrible. Was it shot on video tape?

In summary: Super Monster Gamera, a deeply strange oddity of a film... if you can even call it a film. Making Viras and Zigra retroactively less bad in comparison.

So in short, the worst Gamera movie ever made. I first saw this movie when I was 10 years old man. That was 35 years ago. I haven't watched it since.

So does anyone have a copy by chance of the super elusive Filmways version with English opening/closing credits & title card? The film for some odd reason was aired probably 3 times at least it early 90's. Where I live. I think there was a late night host that had an affinity for older AIP -TV films (though this was not one of them), but alas my copied-from-tv VHS copy has degenerated before I could properly archive it. Sure S!F release includes the dub, but not the English credits. As bad as this film is, I would hate for these to be lost to time.

The one thing I found odd is why they didn't translate the organ song?

I actually enjoy Zigra. I think the idea of a Hitler Space Shark is novel, the music is catchy, and the xylophone BBQ ending is hilarious. That said. Gamera Super Monster is completely unwatchable. I feel dumber after watching it.
