Gamera The Brave Appreciation Thread

Spinning flame-jetted turtles, space birds being chopped up like bologna, kids in shorts screaming for help...the original Gamera series was a strange mix of wacky fun!! The 90's Gamera films set a standard that other kaiju films are measured against! Discuss Gamera films here!!

I'm a big fan of this Gamera The Brave. I'm sure that if it came out after the Showa trilogy, people would like it more.

i actually didnt see GtB until it's Bluray release because fanboys crapped on it so much in various forums and reviews. Needless to say, I am quite glad i bought it on a whim, and I wish they had continued the series, but i guess the box office killed that opportunity.

Now to check out that movie Death Kappa, it can't be as bad as people say...right?

Something tells me that if/when Toho resumes production on the Japanese Godzilla series, Gamera will come back in due time. That's just my wild speculation, but I could be right.

It's bad... for a Millennium movie.

While I prefer the Hesei Gamera films hands down, Gamera the Brave does have a special place in my heart, but I must admin I've only seen it twice. I loved the relationship between baby Gamera and the little boy (can't remember his name), and Zedus was definitely a cool monster and the battle between Zedus and Gamera was definitely very cool. My only complaints about this movie are:

1. Gamera's roar. I mean what were they thinking??
2. I realize this is a kids movie, but I think they could've made more of an effort to make Gamera look a little less cartoonish and stupid. The showa Gamera films were targeted towards kids as well but never looked this stupid.
3. I am not crazy about the title of this movie. Maybe they should've called it Gamera Vs. Zedus, something more exciting other than Gamera the Brave...such a boring title!

That's the English title. Though, to be fair, the Japanese title is kinda worse "Young Braves of Gamera".

Wow! Oh my gosh I think that's the worst title for a giant monster movie I've ever heard.

Even "Big Ass Spider" is a better title and I thought that was bad LOL!

I personally would've preferred a Gamera 4 instead of this movie. I was let down by it. So much so that it's right down there with a few of the later Showa Gamera movies. I guess Kaneko's Gamera Trilogy spoiled me. :P

Like I said, if this was a Showa movie, no one would mind it. However, it had the curse of being released after the 90s Gamera Trilogy.

Does anyone know if there was ever a soundtrack release for this movie? I really liked the music and would love to pick it up if it even exists. It's probably my second favorite Gamera movie after GOTU. I still think Zedus was one of the best suitmation monsters I've seen.

Yes, there was a Gamera CD Music Boxset that was released around the same time as the Gamera Z-Plan DVD Boxset (which was recently updated in Blu-ray format). Anyway, you can buy it individually here...

I'd rather have a stupid suit and a smart script than an okay suit and a stupid script. ^^

At one point, in my mind, I thought they were taking the piss out of Godzilla vs. Megaguirus, namely in the demise of both antagonists. Zedus, who was pretty spry in the film, has his tongue weapon ripped in half and suddenly becomes pretty immobile waiting for Gamera to blast him, in much the same way that Megaguirus loses her main stinger weapon and immediately becomes easy cannon fodder for Godzilla.

I just re-watched the movie, and let me say the action scenes are spectacular, and the monsters themselves are smaller than normal, leaving room for massive and detailed miniature works shot from impressive angles. In fact, much of the film is beautifully photographed, including Toru and a growing Gamera sitting on a cliff overlooking the sea prior to Gamera’s first fight. It is a somber and touching moment, incredibly rare for a film in this genre.

It's easily one of the most beautiful kaiju films ever shot. It's a shame it's also one of the more shunned. :?

Indeed. I blame the fact of it following the Heisei Gamera Films for that.

Yeah it sucks that most people can't seem to appreciate both the Hesei films and GTB.

I'll always love GTB...one of my favorite kaiju films of all time and like Jared said, it's one of the most beautifully shot too

I really dislike those fans, they don't know what change is. It makes me dislike them even more, knowing that if Box-Office was strong enough for Gamera The Brave, we could have had a new Gamera series.

I guess I just didn't read up on the reviews of GTB, other than "It's a kids flick and not a continuation of the Kaneko films" so I went in expecting something childish and simple. I really liked it. People just have thier Kaneko blinders on.

Hi, everyone, this is my first post on here. Some of you might know me from Generation Kikaida and Henshin Justice althought I've been out of the scene for a while. I had severe health issues and then got busy with raising my daughter.

And it's because of her that I'm making this post. She'll be 5 soon and she absolutely loves Gamera, is big fan of all the Showa and Heisei films and it was because of GAMERA THE BRAVE. I think Kadokawa knew what they were doing when they made this because it appealed to children and validated the feelings of Showa era Gamera fans with that spectacular flashback at the beginning. If the plot seemed a bit unoriginal, so be it, because considering Kadokawa was testing the waters, you don't try to reinvent the wheel on a big financial risk.

I would love to see another Gamera film that follows this one up. I don't know where things sit at the moment but it's been many years since then and we need a new Gamera film.

By the way, after watching the movie my daughter insisted I get her this:

Yes, she named it Gamera!
