Breathtaking Anime Film CHILDREN WHO CHASE LOST VOICES FROM DEEP BELOW Screening this Weekend in NYC

Source: NY Int’l Children’s Film Festival press release
Official Movie Site: hoshi-o-kodomo.jp

This upcoming weekend, the NY Int’l Children’s Film Festival will screen the anime feature film CHILDREN WHO CHASE LOST VOICES FROM DEEP BELOW (星を追う子ども, Hoshi o Ou Kodomo, 2011) at the IFC Center in New York City.

Makoto Shinkai is perhaps the world’s finest animator and his brilliant new feature delivers frame after frame of jaw-dropping photorealistic splendor: skyscapes of unspeakable majesty, a butterfly on a twig, a blade of grass — all are rendered with such astounding delicacy and precision that you mourn their passing once the image has left the screen. The story is a modern-day Orpheus tale with a sci-fi twist that pays tribute to the great works of Hayao Miyazaki — especially PRINCESS MONONOKE — with its demonic spirit-gods and magnificent forest creatures.

THRONE OF BLOOD Screening at Barbican June 2nd

Source: Barbican Centre, Sarah Harvey Publicity press release
Special Thanks to Liz Parkinson

The Barbican in London will be screening Akira Kurosawa’s classic THRONE OF BLOOD (蜘蛛巣城, Kumonosu jo) on June 2nd. Akira Kurosawa’s unforgettable transposition of Macbeth to the ghostly forests and grim castles of medieval Japan in the Age of Warring States features a samurai Macbeth that is not a strong, heroic figure, but a frightened, ambitious man who is fearful of the witches’ spell and kills to save his own blood.

Laced with superb performances by Toshiro Mifune in the title role, alongside the wonderful Isuzu Yamada as Lady Macbeth, Kurosawa mixes the Japanese with the Jacobean, drawing upon the imagery of Noh in this indelible dark treasure.

THE FORBIDDEN LEGEND: SEX & CHOPSTICKS 1 & 2 on Australian DVD in May

Erotic Double Feature Streets May 16th
Source: Madman Entertainment

From the director of SEX & ZEN 2 comes a tale of lust, love and chopsticks across two films. THE FORBIDDEN LEGEND: SEX & CHOPSTICKS 1 & 2 capture the erotic and sometimes zany roots of Chinese cinema as did the recent SEX & ZEN: EXTREME ECSTASY. The Double Feature DVD will be released in Australia by Madman Entertainment on May 16th.

Both THE FORBIDDEN LEGEND: SEX & CHOPSTICKS (金瓶梅, Jin Ping Mei, 2008) and THE FORBIDDEN LEGEND: SEX & CHOPSTICKS 2 (金瓶梅II爱的奴隶, Jin Ping Mei er ai de nu li, 2009) are based on a classic erotic novel The Plum in the Golden Vase, the first full length Chinese fictional work to depict sexuality in an explicit manner.

In 12th century China, Simon Qing has been raised by his father, a wealthy merchant and famed sexologist, into the ways of pleasuring a woman. Despite his prowess and rigorous training, he must remain a virgin until he meets the right woman. Thus begins Simon’s odyssey of lust and misadventure across China, searching for true love — or true lust.

Sentai Filmworks Licenses TSURITAMA

Sentai Filmworks is proud to announce their latest catch: Kenji Nakamura’s (AYAKASHI – SAMURAI HORROR TALES) TSURITAMA (つり球, 2012). Originally airing in Fuji Television’s prestigious noitaminA block, TSURITAMA is sure to be the catch of the day.

You can’t catch fish if you don’t go fishing, and you can’t make friends if you don’t at least try. Which is how relationship-challenged student Yuki finds himself on a fishing trip to a tiny island with three other boys he barely knows. Well, two other boys and Haru, who claims that he’s an alien. Not that constantly stewing Natsuki or mysterious Akira are any more likely as prospects for good companionship.

But there’s something about fishing that makes it unlike any other pastime, and maybe that quiet sense of companionship and hopeful expectation is just what Yuki needs to start charting the unfamiliar waters of personal connections. Or maybe it will turn out that Haru’s right and they’re going to have to save the entire planet. There are lots of different kinds of fish stories, from the “ones that got away” to the “best catches ever,” but whichever way the currents of life take them, for four young men, this trip may turn out to be the biggest whopper ever in TSURITAMA!

On June 26th, 2012, THE SAMURAI TRILOGY will be released in digitally restored DVD and Blu-ray box sets by The Criterion Collection.

THE SAMURAI TRILOGY, directed by Hiroshi Inagaki (THE RICKSHAW MAN) and starring the inimitable Toshiro Mifune (SEVEN SAMURAI), was one of Japan’s most successful exports of the 1950s, a rousing, emotionally gripping tale of combat and self-discovery. Based on a novel that’s often called Japan’s Gone with the Wind, this sweeping saga fictionalizes the life of the legendary seventeenth-century swordsman (and writer and artist) Musashi Miyamoto, following him on his path from unruly youth to enlightened warrior. With these three films — 1954′s Oscar-winning MUSASHI MIYAMOTO, 1955′s DUEL AT ICHIJOJI TEMPLE, and 1956′s DUEL AT GANRYU ISLAND — Inagaki created a passionate epic that’s equal parts tender love story and bloody action.

These two special episodes feature the cast and staff that have brought the girls of the Hidamari Apartments to life, including direction by Akiyuki Shinbo (MARIA HOLIC, AND YET THE TOWN MOVES) and character designs by Yoshiaki Ito (ALICE ACADEMY).

Even though studying at a prestigious art school like Yamabuki is hard work, the girls who live at the Hidamari Apartments always manage to squeeze in time for a little fun and exploration. And when they actually get a day off? Watch out world! Yuno, Sae, Hiro, Miyako and new students Nori and Nazuna return to create another masterpiece of life as art, with all new adventures that include swimming, pajama parties, trips to the art museum and even an all-you-can-eat diner courtesy of the landlady!

HIDAMARI SKETCH X SP will be available digitally soon, with a home video release on subtitled DVD scheduled for later this year.

The theme for 2012 will be “Cyberpop Overload!,” and the all-day, weekend-long event will offer many popular attractions that have made the J-Pop Summit Festival a fun annual gathering for fashion, film, anime, video game, technology and music fans as well as pop culture enthusiasts, Bay Area residents, and tourists visiting the city. More than 55,000 people attended last year’s J-Pop Summit Festival, according to the SFPD, and this year’s Festival is expected to attract even more attendees.
