The eagerly-awaited film adaptation of Kanae Minato’s novel!
Toei has provided information and high-res photos from NIGHT’S TIGHTROPE (少女, Shojo), the new feature film based on Shojo (Girls), the hit novel from the acclaimed author of Confessions and The Snow White Murder Case. The story is a feature-length mystery mired in the “forbidden world” of death, and the appeal that lurking darkness has for a pair of 17 year-old girls.
NIGHT’S TIGHTROPE is being promoted as a 4-way women’s collaboration of “writer Kanae Minato × director Yukiko Mishima × actor Tsubasa Honda × actor Mizuki Yamamoto”. Tsubasa Honda has starred in BLUE SPRING RIDE (アオハライド, Aoharaido, 2014) and TERMINAL (起終点駅 ターミナル, Kishuten Eki Taminar, 2015) and will be seen in the 2017 live-action film version of FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST. Mizuki Yamamoto’s credits include THE KIRISHIMA THING (桐島、部活やめるってよ, Kirishima, Bukatsu Yamerutteyo, BLACK BUTLER (黒執事, Kuroshitsuji, 2014) and SADAKO VS KAYAKO (貞子vs伽椰子, 2016). Toei promises that the two popular and talented actresses will present a new side to the personalities, not seen in their previous works.
Two teenage girls harbor a desire to witness the moment when someone dies, in order to come face-to-face with the true meaning of death.
Yuki (Tsubasa Honda) works as a volunteer at a hospital’s pediatric ward in the summer holidays of her second year of high school. Toward the end of last semester, a transfer student in her class named Shiori (Ryo Sato) boasted that she had seen the dead body of her best friend, which left Yuki feeling an indescribable sense of discomfort, and even a little envy.
A desire has grown within her to surpass Shiori by being present when a person actually dies. What’s more, she wants to be the one to make that happen, in the most amusing way. She develops close relationships with the children she works with, who have cruelly little time left to live, and plots to make her dream come true.
Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Yuki, her best friend Atsuko (Mizuki Yamamoto) is volunteering at a nursing home for the elderly. She has been a victim of insidious bullying, and has come close to losing the will to live, but clings to a faint hope that seeing someone die might give her the strength to go on.
So begins their shocking summer holiday…
